Joe Handley Posted April 28, 2016 Posted April 28, 2016 Sadly Mike, people like my Lil' Sister, Mom, or myself (immediate family of a railroader) would likely be seen as "biased" against the person suing and any ambulance chaser worth his billable hours would make dang sure we wouldn't be allowed to serve on a jury for that law suit and even though he is retired, there's no way Dad or other railroaders would be allowed to be near the jury, let lone serve on it!
Joe Handley Posted April 28, 2016 Posted April 28, 2016 This sign used to be pretty common at RR crossings. Stop. Look. Listen. The theory was that by actually USING your senses of vision and hearing, you might be able to avoid getting hit by something as big and noisy as a train. Apparently that's just a silly, obsolete notion. Believe it or not, under federal law, that is a stop sign and has been since the 1800's, even though it hasn't been enforced in any of our lifetimes. Something else too, if somebody were to find themselves on the tracks as a train is coming, that is considering trespassing on federally protected land and should come with an arrest related as such too. we have a double track passing threw our town, in the last 5 yrs, at least 6 or 7 pedestrians have been picked off by trains. wife's girlfriend is a local reporter, last lady who got hit, police told wife's reporter friend, "you dont want to go down there, it's not nice..." i can just imagine, a train doing 45 mph hitting a person.... and i have to agree with Harry about people not paying attention. last x-mas wifey bought me a cheapo media-sonic dash cam. it's incredible what you see on there that you did'nt see while you were driving. A five min trip to the malls and i can count about 20 traffic violations & usually 2 or 3 close calls between other motorists, AND even though we have cell phone laws while driving, BC'er's seem to figure the fine is worth the phone call..... One of the towns my parents used to live in (pre Lil' Sis and myself) had a suicide that happened like that right about the time they were buying the house there. They went to go have dinner with their realtor and her farmer husband (who are still family friends today) but needed to stop by the local funeral home on way there so she could talk to the owner (who, along with his family, also ended up friends of theirs') and when the realtor came out, she was ghost white............apparently he was working on the woman that did that and she wasn't in one piece when this friend of ours walked in and found him, she was not ready for that....................... BTW, did you see the video of one specific street corner in Chilliwack that recently hit YouTube? Don't know what was going on there during 2015, but I wouldn't want to be any of the critters were wandering around that neighborhood in it!
cowboy rich Posted April 28, 2016 Posted April 28, 2016 One of the areas I used to be in Californias central valley (2 bit dirt hole called Cutler) when I went to wort in the morning I had stop and listen before crossing the tracks becuase the fog can get so thick you drive one line at a time on the highway and can't even see the light on a train, it could get pretty sketchy.Rich

Dave Van Posted April 28, 2016 Posted April 28, 2016 If I lived in that house........I'd be in jail shortly..........many of those activities shown will get you shot in WV!!!!
Ace-Garageguy Posted April 28, 2016 Posted April 28, 2016 (edited) Geez. I kinda thought the good ol' USA had a lock on that kind of moronic behavior (re: the Chilliwack video) in da hoods. What's wrong with people? It really didn't used to be this bad. Edited April 28, 2016 by Ace-Garageguy
bismarck Posted April 28, 2016 Posted April 28, 2016 If I lived in that house........I'd be in jail shortly..........many of those activities shown will get you shot in WV!!!! Yep. I grew up in W.Va. I still live just across the river from it. They have very low tolerance for that kind of stuff. Plus most of the people locally are armed to the TEETH.

Dave Van Posted April 29, 2016 Posted April 29, 2016 I'm not a gun nut.....didn't own one until I moved to this VERY rural area and someone in power hinted about dis-arming.....But the fact 99.9% of folks here that can legally own a gun DO does not bother me.....There was a story on the news about a rural Texas town that had 3 times more guns than people and they had no crime.....but almost required kids get a info / safety gun course. Kinda the way it works here.
bismarck Posted April 29, 2016 Posted April 29, 2016 the guy in that house DID go to jail. he's no angel, that camera is there for his "business security" aka-dope dealer. 3 or 4 months ago police finally shut that street down, 4 crackhouses all together, right beside a high school.....nice. belive me, that video is NOT representive of my town. i'm sure every town has at least one bad area, and then you got dope dealers putting this kind of stupid stuff out there, knowing full well his "business" is responsible for a lot of this bs.... as to the p poor driving....what can i say....dont give me a lot of hope for the youth of today.... that brownish silver building is the 2 yr old 10 mil $ new school that looks like it's been there 50 yrs now...(after 2) Bill, dont know, lived in this burg for 40 yrs....find myself saying "use to" a lot when describing my town now. and american or canadian, stupid dont recognize borders... Kevin, this is canaDUH! just try to get a handgun up here....legally that is. might as well as ask for a thermo-nuclear permit while your at it. our gov "lets" us own rifles, but let anyone even see you with a rifle (in your yard, on the street, at the mall....) and even if you have your mandatory trigger lock on, breech zip-tied open, clips out without bullets (they must be carried in seperate containers, none in your clips) still expect a nice, warm, swat reception....but they dont say much about bats, chains, knives..... True enough on all counts. Knives and chains, bricks, just about anything can and does get used as a weapon around here in fights. The most alarming one I saw was one guy had another one pinned under his 4 wheeler, and kept trying to ramp him. The guy under it prob went 3 bills and was pinned pretty tight. This happened right across the street from my house in a public school parking lot.
1930fordpickup Posted May 1, 2016 Posted May 1, 2016 A good friends great grandfather was killed by a train track that crossed his driveway. Her mother is 90 so this was well before most people having a phone in their house. Compliance is not always a good thing, when you get something on your mind you forget things. RR tracks by a school is never a good thing , as one died here not to long ago. now they are changing the road and tracks .

Ace-Garageguy Posted May 4, 2016 Posted May 4, 2016 wow! talk about timing. the chilliwack trains picked off another person today, i think.on my way home from work, train was stopped across the road, police had the road blocked 'bout 500 feet back from the tracks, and there was an ambo there, and he was in no hurry. not to be crass, but it also looked like some kind of "liquid" on one car where everyone was standing....guess i'll find out in the paper tomorrow or thursday what happened....Any luck at all, it was one of the little thieves in the video.
Harry Joy Posted May 4, 2016 Posted May 4, 2016 (edited) My 80 year old dad has a serious peeve that he shares with me frequently - about how the news always plays out a train/car collision as "Sadly today, someone was killed when a train hit their car at Poplar and Southern" or something similar. He'll roll his eyes and say "Technically speaking, the train was where it was supposed to be", implying that the car, in point of fact, hit the train. He will switch it out with pedestrians when necessary, as when some well known Memphis blogger was jogging on a train track with his earphones on a couple of years ago.A close friend of my dad in the 80s was an engineer. He finally quit the business after one too many collisions. It really messed up his head, since he could see the collisions coming and not be able to do anything but watch. Ace-Garageguy Posted May 5, 2016 Posted May 5, 2016 first reports were wrong, it was not a young guy, bit of a sad story here, was a 70 yr old man. was the anniversary of his wife's death.....just picked a horrible way to do it, especially with our new assisted death laws...I can certainly understand hurting so bad and wanting to end it, but to make it someone else's horror and transfer the pain to an innocent 3rd party is inexcusable, the definition of selfish wallowing-in-self-pity.
