You might check around some of the inexpensive furniture stores in your area. In the past I found some very nice real wood book case type units with adjustable shelves. These happen to be about 6 foot high but there are many sizes out there. This gives my four adjustable display shelves with another two shelves that I use for books and magazines. I have seen some very good looking pressed wood shelving units that would also work.

About a month ago when I came back from the flea market my neighbor had just put out a solid wood gun cabinet for the trash. Nothing wrong with it and even had the keys in it. Put a top and bottom light in it and am waiting on finances to allow for the purchase of some plexiglass to make shelves for it. Should hold about sixty cars, five per shelf. Bonus is the cartridge cabinet below will hold paints or spare parts out of sight. Will post some pictures when I get it finished.

I got lucky and picked up this bad boy for 60 bucks at a local thrift store.

This was about 40 shelves ago. But, then again, I'm really, really old, so..........

Just a shelf, that's easy.

I'm to the point of needing another display case. I keep thinking about adding glass shelves in one of the cases to make do for the time being,,,as I don't really have room for another big display case like one of these

You can get real glass cut at a glass shop cheap!  I did that a few years ago for my wife's curio cabinets that had wood shelves.  You can get shelf pegs at Lowes or Home Depot.

My main display case in the office on the main level of the house.  This is where I keep my own builds.  It's time to add a glass shelf between each original shelf. It's hard to get a photo with the mirror back!

My original case that I've had 20+ years. Got it from my sister when she moved. It's upstairs in the model room. I keep interesting old built ups in it.  It also could use extra shelves.

The narrow case was a garbage day special.  I keep my Olde Kustom Kollection in this one.

If I ever get my hobby room finished I'll probably do something different.

For what you have tied up in display cases you could buy a very nice shelving unit.

Yea, but he paid for this one on the installment plan... he bought one case at a time!   :D
