Rider Posted June 3, 2016 Posted June 3, 2016 (edited) Great rims! Best of luck with the rest of the chop process. I have don't one of these vans with a chop, OMG, what a ton of work. Really looking forward to see how you work through this process. I didn't brace mine at all. It ended up twisting with all the heat from the bondo, glue and such. I am just guessing that was the cause. Edited June 3, 2016 by Rider
Pete J. Posted June 6, 2016 Author Posted June 6, 2016 (edited) Ok, so we mocked up the chassis and body and I decided I didn't want the rear tires sticking outside the body shell and I couldn't come up with a way to add width to the rear fenders that I liked the looks of. So it is time to do tub the rear fender wells. More cutting, moving, and adding plastic and filler and grinding but that is what I chose. Oh, by the way, I'm ok with the way the fronts sit. Next thing will be figuring out how to mount the rear axle to get the ride highth I want. This car is going to be low, but not a lowrider. Edited June 6, 2016 by Pete J.
Ace-Garageguy Posted June 6, 2016 Posted June 6, 2016 Machine work on the custom rims is top of the line. Very nice, sir.
Pete J. Posted June 6, 2016 Author Posted June 6, 2016 Machine work on the custom rims is top of the line. Very nice, sir. Thank you Bill. Been playing with my Sherline's for many years now and am finally getting somewhat proficient with them.
Randy D Posted June 6, 2016 Posted June 6, 2016 Hi Pete, Now this is an interesting build from you. That body work is looking first rate and the machine work is Superb!!!! Randy
Pete J. Posted June 7, 2016 Author Posted June 7, 2016 Hi Pete, Now this is an interesting build from you. That body work is looking first rate and the machine work is Superb!!!! Randy Randy, Thank you for your kind words. It is a bit unusual for me, but then it is a club challenge build and since I didn't participate in the last two, I felt obliged to tackle this one. From the last build, there was a lot of imagination in the club so I really need to work on this one. I am still designing this one in my head. Not sure what the final design will be, so I am excited to see where it finally winds up!
Pete J. Posted June 7, 2016 Author Posted June 7, 2016 Great start on the tubbing Pete. Thanks Shay. I have an engineer friend who's favorite saying is "No modification goes unpunished." That is always the risk is these sort of things. You change one thing and that means you have to change two more. In this case it is the Chassis than now needs modifying to fit the tires as well. That would then mean a change to the width of the axle etc. ect. etc.
Rider Posted June 7, 2016 Posted June 7, 2016 Good luck Pete.Very true statment on the ripple effect.
misterNNL Posted June 7, 2016 Posted June 7, 2016 Ripple effect is also known as "overcomplicationitis".
Pete J. Posted June 8, 2016 Author Posted June 8, 2016 (edited) Ok guys, first mockup with tires, chassis and body. I think the rear is ok but I need to get the front down. It is just sitting too level. That would be nice if I slammed it, but I want a little more aggressive stance. What do you think? By the way, I am thinking Red Bull for color. Edited June 8, 2016 by Pete J.
stavanzer Posted June 8, 2016 Posted June 8, 2016 Front needs to go a tick lower, but I like the rear. As for the Colour, I'd suggest an 1980's Posie's style Two Tone, breaking at the fender tops. Not seen often anymore, but from the side, that body is just tailor made for it, IMHO. Your thoughts, of course may be completely different. The wheels, (to me, anyhow) play into that Posie's vibe, especially the colour they are now.

That is how they do the promotional cars that they take to events.
Pete J. Posted June 9, 2016 Author Posted June 9, 2016 Ok, one of the things that drives me absolutely nuts when judging models is tires that are not square and all four on the ground. I know that when changing suspension geometerey it is not easy to make it work, especially on an older kit like this. This is the jig that I used to drill the axle holes and lower the front end by .150" I know it looks complex but as I said "square and level" are a must. Weird tire alignment just drives me nuts!
Pete J. Posted August 5, 2016 Author Posted August 5, 2016 Ok, it has been a while since I posted anything and I have been busy. Finally decided on a paint scheme for the Chevy. I decided to make it a Red Bull promotional car. I need a couple of more coats of clear and then sand and polish it out and do the bright work and work on the interior. You can see the Mexican blanket front seat. It needs some ageing and a flat coat. It is moving along.
mustang1989 Posted September 1, 2016 Posted September 1, 2016 Lookin' good! Can't wait to see the polishing outcome.

mod3l Lover Posted September 2, 2016 Posted September 2, 2016 This is looking incredible for sure!! David S.
426-Hemi Posted September 6, 2016 Posted September 6, 2016 -I must say, I'm not the only one that goes off the deep end with mis-aligned tires and rims then! I LOVE seeing others using mills and lathes on their builds such as I do!NICE jig for gluing them 100% vertical I have a set of those right-angle braces too! -They work well for wheel mounting!
Pete J. Posted September 7, 2016 Author Posted September 7, 2016 Hey guys, thanks a lot. I am getting down to the end of this build. I have been experimenting with other paint (urethane) on another model and that has distracted me from this build but the body is polished out and the pipes are done. Still working on the interior but it is getting there rather quickly. I should have some "under glass" photos shortly.
Pete J. Posted September 7, 2016 Author Posted September 7, 2016 Randy, thanks for looking in. It was kind of an evolving paint job and now that it is polished out it looks far better.
