cobraman Posted June 18, 2016 Posted June 18, 2016 (edited) Don't recall if I ever built a helicopter before. This one my BIL purchased and asked if I would build for him. ( seems I have been building a lot for other people lately : ) Anyway this is the type of copter they had on the Princeton aircraft carrier when he was stationed on it many years ago. How could I say no ? Edited June 23, 2016 by cobraman update and done
Ace-Garageguy Posted June 18, 2016 Posted June 18, 2016 I love those old radial-engined Sikorskys. Quite an experience in multi-frequency vibration to fly one of those things, especially compared to a turbine-powered bird. You find yourself wondering how it avoids shaking itself to bits in the first few minutes of flight.
Snake45 Posted June 18, 2016 Posted June 18, 2016 This is a fairly new kit (last year or two), and one that's been wanted/needed for a long time. I have one but haven't started it yet. I've seen a few built and they look pretty good.

I've seen a few built and they look pretty good. So...I bees curious. I know Revell had Sikorsky S55 kits in the wayback in 1/48 scale, 'cause I had 'em. The H-34 is a Sikorsky S58...which is basically a longer S55 with 3-point landing gear. Anybody know if the new kit is an update of the old tool?
Snake45 Posted June 19, 2016 Posted June 19, 2016 New kit is a complete new tool, AFAIK nothing in common with the S55 except the scale.
cobraman Posted June 22, 2016 Author Posted June 22, 2016 Well I guess I don't build helicopters any better than I do cars. This one is close to being done. More decals needed and a few small parts. Rotor blades are just sitting on and not at the proper level.
cobraman Posted June 22, 2016 Author Posted June 22, 2016 Thanks. Hopefully it will look better when I wrap it up.
cobraman Posted June 23, 2016 Author Posted June 23, 2016 Thanks ! I finished it up and will post pics later today.
Ace-Garageguy Posted June 23, 2016 Posted June 23, 2016 It looks great from here, Ray. Nothing to feel bad about on that model, for sure.
SfanGoch Posted June 24, 2016 Posted June 24, 2016 I love rotary wing things and you hit a homer with this one.
cobraman Posted June 24, 2016 Author Posted June 24, 2016 Thank you very much fellows. Hope my BIL will like it.
wayne swayze Posted June 24, 2016 Posted June 24, 2016 I know squat about things that fly, but as a MODEL, it looks well done to me....FWIM.
Jim B Posted June 24, 2016 Posted June 24, 2016 Nice looking whirly-bird! Very well done, Ray. I'm sure your BIL will be very please with it.
Agent G Posted June 24, 2016 Posted June 24, 2016 Nicely done sir.I really like the display as well. Did you scribe the deck planks yourself?G
cobraman Posted June 24, 2016 Author Posted June 24, 2016 Thanks Wayne. Yes, I cut the lines and then used a marker to darken them before staining. Tried to mimic the deck of the ship my BIL was stationed on.
Harry P. Posted June 25, 2016 Posted June 25, 2016 Ray, why the apology for the model? From what I can see, it looks great! I think you did a fine job on it.
cobraman Posted June 25, 2016 Author Posted June 25, 2016 Thanks Harry. When I saw you left a response I thought for sure you were going to ask where the mirrors are.
