Xingu Posted July 10, 2016 Posted July 10, 2016 Well, never let it be said that I do not show my failures. This model will sit near my bench as a reminder of what can happen when you skip important steps. Everything was going well until I painted the body. I lightly primed the body with Tamiya white primer and sprayed HOK True Blue over it. My guess is either not enough primer or I should have used the white automotive primer that was right next to the Tamiya. The entire paint job has what I am guessing everyone calls crazing. I also left a nice glue print on the driver's side glass. The glass did not fit the body well and I decided to use Tamiya Extra Thin Cement for the extra strength. It flowed a little to well and I ended up leaving a print as I was holding the glass in place. There are a few other minor issues as well. The photos do not show how bad the paint job really is. I could have stripped it and resprayed, but it will sit on my bench as a visual reminder of what can go wrong. The kit itself is very nice. I had the issue with poorly fitting glass and getting the body on the chassis was a bit tricky, but other than that the kit was very nice and went together well.
Crazy Ed Posted July 10, 2016 Posted July 10, 2016 Ok, the Glue thing's a bit of a problem. But had you not mentioned the "crazing" I woulda just thought you wanted a Satin finish.
slusher Posted July 10, 2016 Posted July 10, 2016 I see that the paint is not shining but it does not look cleared or like Ed commented a satin finish I choose Tamiya primer over all other brands myself.
aurfalien Posted July 10, 2016 Posted July 10, 2016 It still looks nice though. In terms of your crazing issue, odd that it may have been caused by too little primer. My go to guy who runs a hobby shop and also builds for a living (ppl pay him good coin to build kits) doesn't use much primer, but he does only use Tamiya primers. And he only sprays with Tamiya lacquers as well.So mebbe a compatibility issue between the plastic and the HOK?For this reason I am starting to use sealers like a real spray sealer or Future as a barrier between primer and final paint or bare plastic and primer.Bummer about the mishaps, I've had plenty myself and feel for you.
花火 Posted July 10, 2016 Posted July 10, 2016 (edited) turned out very nice. I like this color. To be true, I firstly thought that 959 is bad-looking between cars of Porsche, but recent days i feel like it just a total beauty! Edited July 10, 2016 by 花火
Xingu Posted July 10, 2016 Author Posted July 10, 2016 I see that the paint is not shining but it does not look cleared or like Ed commented a satin finish I choose Tamiya primer over all other brands myself. There are 4 coats of HOK clear on it. The paint was already crazed before the clear. It took it as an opportunity to try the HOK clear from the airbrush. I usually use Tamiya from spray cans.turned out very nice. I like this color. To be true, I firstly thought that 959 is bad-looking between cars of Porsche, but recent days i feel like it just a total beauty!I am happy with the color, but not the application. The 959 has one of the ugliest interiors I have seen. Really, do not like the multi-color seats in the 1:1 reference photos. Was why I decided to see how a tan interior would come out.
bbowser Posted July 10, 2016 Posted July 10, 2016 I like it, warts and all. I have several similar examples in my collection
Mike 1017 Posted July 10, 2016 Posted July 10, 2016 HOK does need to be shot over automotive primer. Most of HOK paints are basecoats and do need to be cleared.I also see orange peel but no crazing . You do have to color sand it before the clear. Don't worry about color sanding metallic paint. It looks like BLAH_BLAH_BLAH_BLAH when you are done but comes to life after the clear. You will be amazed. I am gonna paint my Aventador using HOK Galaxy Grey Metallic Basecoat If all goes well I post it here next week.
Custom Mike Posted July 10, 2016 Posted July 10, 2016 Nice looking kit other than the paint issues, I built one years ago, and it is not an easy kit to get together at the end!The paint issues you have are simple, HOK paints are true Lacquers, Tamiya is a Synthetic Lacquer. The HOK ate right through the Tamiya Primer, that's all. Next time you use HOK, use a barrier to protect the underlying plastic. I use Dupli-Color Primer-Sealer myself, others use Future, Plasti-Cote, etc, just find something that will save the model from the "hot" solvents in HOK paint.
Xingu Posted July 10, 2016 Author Posted July 10, 2016 That was the step I forgot/skipped. I know I need to use my Dupli-Color primer, but for some reason (voices in my head) I decided to use a light coat of Tamiya. This should be the last time I make that mistake.
da_ashman Posted July 11, 2016 Posted July 11, 2016 (edited) Bummer about the paint problem! I had a similar thing happen to my Tamiy Porsche turbo, gave it a nice coat of white primer & then airbrushed the pearl white colour & wham, it went all yuck. Into the brake fluid it went. dmaaged the plastic too, had to sand it alot to get a smooth finish. Think we all have to learn this lession the hard way... Edited July 11, 2016 by da_ashman
Randy D Posted July 11, 2016 Posted July 11, 2016 Hi Mike, At least you got one done ! It really looks pretty good in the photos. I thought I was the only one that pulled that trick with Tamiya Thin! Randy

I forgot about Plastic Cote primer and I use to use it all the time but it was getting hard to find so i changed a few years back...
Helix Posted July 11, 2016 Posted July 11, 2016 Regardless of your paint drama, this is a nice looking build, I built one years ago and painted it 'Brick Kiln Red' and had similar issues, bought another one which I plan to build one day
Dann Tier Posted July 11, 2016 Posted July 11, 2016 Wow, its too bad you had those problems -VERY unexpected from a Tamiya kit, but you did do a nice klean job of it! Q: was it your windscreen that was warped, not wanting to fit?
Scalper Posted July 11, 2016 Posted July 11, 2016 Looks great to me. Fell in love with this car because of test drive on my Amiga.

Q: was it your windscreen that was warped, not wanting to fit?It was the driver's side glass. Wasn't warped bad, but enough to give me fits and a glue print to remind me.I have 5 other Tamiya kits waiting for their turn. I think I will save the Enzo for last though. Overall, I really like the Tamiya kits.
