Allen Wrench Posted September 5, 2016 Posted September 5, 2016 Not sure if this has been covered here or not, but this is for anyone building the blown SBC in the new Revell '30 Ford coupe ... the instructions incorrectly show the blower drive belt (part 136) mounting upside down. The end with the tensioner pulley attaches to the blower.
Snake45 Posted September 5, 2016 Posted September 5, 2016 Interesting. So the idler ends up on the left (driver) side of the blower, then? I've never seen one anywhere but on the right side. Then again, I've never seen one mounted low off the front cover, either.
Allen Wrench Posted September 5, 2016 Author Posted September 5, 2016 The blower setup in the '62 Corvette gasser has basically the same configuration.
Ace-Garageguy Posted September 5, 2016 Posted September 5, 2016 (edited) Snake's right though...on a real car, the idler / tensioner is ALWAYS positioned on the non-drive side of the pulleys. It's just the way it's done, and it's done that way for a very sound engineering reason. Most engines you'll ever see running this type of blower rotate clockwise as you're facing the front of the engine. This means it's the right-hand side (as you're facing the front of the engine) of the belt that is tight between the drive pulley on the crank and the driven pulley on the blower, and the side that is transmitting the "drive" between the two by being pulled. This side of the belt can not have the tensioner / idler on it. Edited September 5, 2016 by Ace-Garageguy
Mark Posted September 5, 2016 Posted September 5, 2016 The instructions show it upside-down AND backwards. When you put it on the right way, the idler will be where it's supposed to be. The "backwards" part isn't apparent because the drawing doesn't show a mounting pin that's on the upper pulley.
Mark Posted September 5, 2016 Posted September 5, 2016 Which exposes a minor problem...no bracket for the idler, it hangs in outer space. Shouldn't be too much grief to make one. This and the firewall issue, still detract little from an otherwise excellent kit.
Ace-Garageguy Posted September 5, 2016 Posted September 5, 2016 Good to know....but the hanging-in-space idler is something of an issue.
1930fordpickup Posted September 5, 2016 Posted September 5, 2016 Good to know....but the hanging-in-space idler is something of an issue. It just has a really stiff spring. LOL
timc Posted September 5, 2016 Posted September 5, 2016 If you look close. The mounting bracket is there. Its the flat part between the two pulleys, which would put it mounting to the front of the blower shaft. As shown in some of the 1/1 pictures, where the idler pulley is closer to the blower.

Ace-Garageguy Posted September 5, 2016 Posted September 5, 2016 Indeed, the bracket is visible in the instruction drawing above, just flip it, and turn it to correct it. Thanks! AHA ! So, what we end up with is the tensioner / idler arm pivoting off the end of the blower drive shout, in order to give clearance for the street-setup additional V-belts. Something like this...
tim boyd Posted September 6, 2016 Posted September 6, 2016 Just to reconfirm, the pulley is shown upside AND backwards in the instructions, as Mark notes above. It is 100% correct when installed as originally designed. Revell has been advised and will correct the instruction assembly manual in the next production run And Tim, John and Bill are correct - the pulley idler bracket is correctly molded; the idler pulley does not hang in space. With some detail paint it is very evident in the final assembled form.Another neat detail of this engine is the way the upper radiator hose slinks around the blower drive pulley and belt and connects perfectly to the radiator. As you guys well know, I'm no fan of SBC's in Ford hot rods, but if you like street-applicable blown SBC's in 1/25th scale, this engine is about the best one I can think of in a 1/25th scale kit these days. TIM PS - for some reason, the front radius rod part numbers on the Highboy version of the '30 A Coupe kit are reversed on the assembly manual. If you have the '29 Roadster kit, refer to the assembly manual there; the part numbers are correctly called out there. Again, Revell has been notified. TB
