Ace-Garageguy Posted September 9, 2016 Posted September 9, 2016 The "A" "poly" engine is based on the first generation Chrysler Hemi bottom end. My understanding is that real poly heads and intake manifolds will swap on to Hemi blocks that have the same deck height.Renderings of the two engines show them to have similar oil pan configurations as well. Distributors are in the rear on both.Looks like a good way to get a scale "poly" engine would be to just modify some existing heads and a hemi intake manifold, scratch-build the "poly" valve covers, then hang appropriate accessories on a slightly modified timing-cover / water pump setup...stick it all on a gen-one hemi bottom end.
my66s55 Posted September 9, 2016 Posted September 9, 2016 The heads and valve covers for the hemi version poly have already been done. If you go back to Bill G's post in this thread and follow the referenced thread, you will see them. The A engine had very little similarity to the hemi based version. reference: http://www.allpar.com/mopar/a-engines.html. The A was exclusive to the 56, 57 and 58 Plymouth. The Hemi version was used in the other Chrysler lines. The A heads and manifold will not interchange with hemi heads and manifold.

Not being extremely familiar with old Mopar engines other than the Hemis, I'd assumed all the "poly" engines with similar appearing valve covers were based on the same architecture. I should know better that to assume. Edited September 9, 2016 by Ace-Garageguy
1972coronet Posted September 10, 2016 Posted September 10, 2016 The flat head 6 would have the obscure Power-Flite (A-466) , which is a 2-speed. The 318-A and 350-B had the A-488 TorqueFlite (cast iron precursor of the 1962 aluminum 727 )I doubt that anyone made / makes the 466 Power-Flite.
slusher Posted September 10, 2016 Posted September 10, 2016 What engine is in the movie car Christine...?Nobody want to answer ? Sorry for asking....
my66s55 Posted September 10, 2016 Posted September 10, 2016 Nobody want to answer ? Sorry for asking....Carl, check this out and it may shed some light on your question. http://www.allpar.com/history/christine.html
ChrisBcritter Posted September 10, 2016 Posted September 10, 2016 Actually, Carl, that's a tough question; seems to be a lot of info out there about the movie cars except what was under the hood! The only shot that shows the engine intact appears to depict a Wedge with dual quads and Siamesed air cleaners; maybe you could contact Martin Sanchez and ask him what was in his car and in the wrecks he saw in the junkyard?

426-Hemi Posted September 11, 2016 Posted September 11, 2016 (edited) What engine is in the movie car Christine...?I'm sorry Carl, I didn't see your question, the '58 Plymouth Belvedere "Christine" had a Chrysler "B" 361 in it. basically the same motor "B" 350 that Chrysler overbored. In the book and in the movie, they called the car a "Fury" in the movie it was simply a Belvedere with all the badging removed and some of the chrome trim removed to "look" somewhat, the part of a Fury.... MrObsessive Posted September 11, 2016 Posted September 11, 2016 In the book and in the movie, they called the car a "Fury" in the movie it was simply a Satelite with all the badging removed and some of the chrome trim removed to "look" somewhat, the part of a Fury.... You mean a Belvedere dontcha?
426-Hemi Posted September 12, 2016 Posted September 12, 2016 You mean a Belvedere dontcha? Yes! I no idea WHY I said Satelite, (I know why, I'm working on planning a mold of a '71 Satelite grille!) But YES a Belvedere NOT a Satelite!
