StevenGuthmiller Posted December 18, 2016 Posted December 18, 2016 Thought that this could be a fun thread just for historical purposes if nothing else. Let's see what everyone has for "rare" kits that "they" have built. For the sake of this topic, lets not have any unbuilt, unfinished or kits built by someone else. You may post more than one if you're not certain which is actually more rare. This is nothing scientific, just your perception of which of your builds are the most difficult to come by today. Let's see some relics! I've built quite a few that are few & far between, but the '61 Plymouth Fury & the '58 Ford were probably the ones that I had the most difficulty finding of my built kits. Steve
Chuck Most Posted December 18, 2016 Posted December 18, 2016 Probably AMT's '69 Lincoln Continental annual- this started as an untouched original kit. I still have the box, instructions, and decal sheet somewhere.
Snake45 Posted December 18, 2016 Posted December 18, 2016 Unless/until I can think of something else, this will have to do: Original annual AMT '66 Skylark GS, built by me just like this in 1969.
Ace-Garageguy Posted December 18, 2016 Posted December 18, 2016 ...For the sake of this topic, lets not have any...unfinished...kits... Oh man. I feel I'm being discriminated against. I'm going to call my lawyer and the ACLU and anybody else I can think of who will listen to my idiotic point of view.
Snake45 Posted December 18, 2016 Posted December 18, 2016 Maybe the '68 Javelin promo I "restified" a couple years ago, next to the annual JoHan kit I built in 1968? How about the original annual MPC '68 GTO I built in 1968, along with a very similar built one I bought from Hobby Heaven in the late '80s, and restored both of them last year?
Snake45 Posted December 18, 2016 Posted December 18, 2016 MPC Dick Harrell Camaro funny car I built in '69 or maybe '70? You don't see all that many of these anymore.
gtx6970 Posted December 18, 2016 Posted December 18, 2016 My rarest kit isnt even in my short list yet (johan 59 Fury) The ' i have to be the builder ' quote......hmmmmmm .i am gonna have to think about this a bit
Can-Con Posted December 18, 2016 Posted December 18, 2016 A '72 Toronado is quite rare,, But then again, so is a '61 Corvair.

StevenGuthmiller Posted December 18, 2016 Author Posted December 18, 2016 MPC Dick Harrell Camaro funny car I built in '69 or maybe '70? You don't see all that many of these anymore. I'm not sure I see it now! Well, half of it anyway. Steve
Chuck Most Posted December 18, 2016 Posted December 18, 2016 Good one Chuck!Of the Continental kits, the late 60s are really tough to find. SteveI just stumbled across this online one day, and made arrangements with the guy who found it to get it into my possession. Paid fifty bucks for it and I feel like that was a screaming deal. I do have a couple of '62's as well, but one is unfinished and the other I no longer have any pics of, so I'll exclude them for now.
StevenGuthmiller Posted December 18, 2016 Author Posted December 18, 2016 A '72 Toronado is quite rare,, But then again, so is a '61 Corvair. Very nice Steve! Great looking examples! To be perfectly honest, I didn't even know there was a '72 Toronado! & a beauty it is! Steve

I have several continentals myself, but nothing that recent or built.I have a '59, '60 & '61 as well as the '65 that everyone else has.I've contemplated starting all 3 of them at some point, but something else always seems to wind up taking precedence. Steve
StevenGuthmiller Posted December 18, 2016 Author Posted December 18, 2016 Oh man. I feel I'm being discriminated against. I'm going to call my lawyer and the ACLU and anybody else I can think of who will listen to my idiotic point of view. Please, no lawyers allowed on this thread! If it makes you feel better Bill, I'll allow one project car just for you, Mostly because I don't want the ACLU coming down on me! Steve

Steve Eventually, I plan to have at least one of every '61-'65 and '66-'69 variant. I'm hopeful that the tooling for the '69 might turn up some day and Round 2 will see fit to bring it back...
Chuck Most Posted December 18, 2016 Posted December 18, 2016 But then again, so is a '61 Corvair. If it were at all possible for this kit to make a comeback, I'd be good for a dozen right now.
pharoah Posted December 18, 2016 Posted December 18, 2016 I guess mine would be a Monogram Futurista from 1965. I have the box and instructions, along with the store display that I made.
Eshaver Posted December 18, 2016 Posted December 18, 2016 I guess this AMT 1960 Ford truck . This came to me unpainted , partly assembled by way of George 53 several years ago .
pack rat Posted December 18, 2016 Posted December 18, 2016 Maybe not the rarest, but these qualify. The Derby ElCamino and the Demon were purchased new, I bought the Coronet about 20 years ago. All three have been rebuilt/refurbished at least once.
maltsr Posted December 18, 2016 Posted December 18, 2016 Probably this one, it's certainly the most expensive after adding in shipping to New Zealand and aftermarket decals.
Ron Hamilton Posted December 18, 2016 Posted December 18, 2016 This is, in my opinion, my rarest model. I bought several years ago as an unbuilt kit, and built it myself.

Nice Ellen! I just picked one of these up a couple of weeks ago, & you're right, it took a long time for me to find a good one! Steve

The Derby ElCamino and the Demon were purchased new, I bought the Coronet about 20 years ago. All three have been rebuilt/refurbished at least once. Nice stuff Mike! I especially like the Demon! I've tentatively looked around for one of these & they're definitely not plentiful. My dad almost bought a '71 Demon in Panther Pink for me to use while I was in school. Instead I wound up with a green '72 Fury 4 door sedan! Steve

That is without a doubt one of the rarest you'll find Ron! The '65/'66 Monacos are tough enough, but the '65/'66 880 & Polara convertibles are nearly impossible! I was watching an un-built '66 Monaco on ebay recently & I put in a pretty healthy bid on it. I couldn't believe it when it went for over $400.00!! I guess it just may be one that I'll have to scratch off of my want list. Steve
