Halibrand Wheel Project

Recommended Posts

These are found in the Fujimi (and presumably the reboxed Revell) Ford GT40 kits: *edit* far better image in next post.

A few more shots of the wheels found in the Revell '31 Ford Model A Sedan kit. These have some seriously "frosty" chrome plating, but I think they are from an early issue and don't seem to have a crispness later issued wheels don't:

Well, here are two good article over at Hot Rod Magazine covering Halibrand wheels specifically...http://www.hotrod.com/articles/1008sr-halibrand-engineering-wheels/

...and aftermarket racing wheels in general, including some Halibrand mentions: http://www.hotrod.com/articles/defining-hot-rod-and-custom-car-legacy-wheels-part-2/

The first article has some very good info and even better, large images for reference, like so:

Those are cool Casey, maybe you should cast them?

Saw them on eBay last night...got outbid. <_<   I'm not even sure they are a replica of a real wheel, though. Have to do more digging, I guess.

Maybe they are these?:

A rare one - the Metalflake issue of the Revell '62 Valiant featured these 4-lug 13" Halibrands:

Not sure if there was such a thing in real life?

Halibrand Smooth wheels found in the AMT Double Dragster kit:

The drag version of the AMT '28 Model A sedan had four of these same wheels, also the '65 Bonneville used similar ones with machined center caps for the custom option:

Apparently the Road Racing Kidney Bean style wheels were available in two different kits, in two different diameters, but I don't know which came in which kit(s). I'm assuming one is from the AMT 289 Cobra kit, but not sure:

These 5-slot wheels from the 1/24 (ex-Monogram) Revell '36 Ford  Coupe Street Rod kit, but I'm not sure they are in fact Halibrand wheels, so subject to future deletion if not. I honestly think they look more like E-T wheels with the large brake cooling vents:

Not sure if these had a specific name or not, but they are Halibrand are were found in the Revell Fumin' Fiat/Thunder Charger, Scarlet Screamer/Bantam Bomber, and sanitary 'T' bucket/Mooneyes Dragster double kits:

Next up is an unknown Halibrand wheel with four brake cooling slots...maybe from an AMT kit due to the axle rod stub on the back? Not from the Revell TV Tommy Ivo Showboat kit:

Typically called "big window" but I think "Speedway" is the official name.

Not sure what kit these came from, they were in my parts box for years!! They look like they are/could be Halibrand wheels.

Those look like the rear wheels from the Monogram 1/24 Barracuda F/C kits, but I don't think those are Halibrand wheels, as they have no raised edge around the brake cooling vents.

These 16" JO-HAN F/C and P/S rear wheels? I would definitely say these are Halibrand wheels:

The top ones are from AMT's Cobra kit. The bottom ones (closest to camera) are AMT Parts pack pieces.

These were in early issues of AMT's Trophy Series '57 Chevy. Original issue and 1967-issue "The Gasser" for sure.

There's an unusual set of supposed-to-be Halibrands on the front of the Tony Nancy 22 Jr. '29 Ford that I've never seen anywhere else...

While the below cars' rear wheels are wider and have more spokes, I wonder if they are also made by Halibrand, and possibly the same model, or a later version of the wheels on Nancy's 22 Jr.? I know I have seen these wheels on a '68-'72 Nova flopper, too, but no luck searching for an image.

I do not ever recall seeing these wheels in scale, though. Not surprising as they seem to be few and far between in the real world.

Same wheels on the front of this Willys?

I updated the kit source for these wheels above, just FYI. The Revvell "T" Touring kit does contain the same style wheels, but I don't recall if they are the same size as those from the 1/24 '36 Ford kits or not. I want to say they are smaller, but no longer have any on hand to measure/compare.

I figured out what the wheels on Nancy's car are some time back; they're old Sprint smoothies mounted backwards...

Pretty sure this kit uses the same tires as the 1980s-revision Monogram '36 Ford coupe. Fronts are Monogram Michelin TRX and rears are the standard-size Monogram Goodyear GT Radial. Wheels in the Touring have separate knockoffs too.
