afx Posted January 28, 2017 Posted January 28, 2017 Bought this incomplete trailer on ebay. Gave it a good scrubbing and started work on restoring it. You can see some of the repairs and improvements I have made so far compared to the stock kit trailer next to it.
oldcarfan Posted January 28, 2017 Posted January 28, 2017 This is the one from the 1976 MPC Caprice, right? Really nice!
afx Posted January 28, 2017 Author Posted January 28, 2017 This is the one from the 1976 MPC Caprice, right? Really nice! Thanks Gary. This particular trailer came from the Mako Shark II kit. Yes it is the same trailer as in the '76 Caprice kit.
afx Posted January 29, 2017 Author Posted January 29, 2017 Very nice! What's going to pull that rig. That's a good question Mike! I have nothing built that will do the job. I have a diecast Ford pickup that may have to fill in until I can get something built.
kilrathy10 Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 Man, this is one of my favorite kit trailers....Your improvements look great....This is gonna be cool....
afx Posted January 29, 2017 Author Posted January 29, 2017 (edited) Thanks JT. Fabricated some hold down brackets for the loading ramps. I insert the cut off straight pin up through the cross member and glue it into the handle. This allows the handles to be rotated to permit removal and stowing of the ramps. afx Posted February 1, 2017 Author Posted February 1, 2017 I thought the kit part tail-light housings are a bit too thick so a fabricated something more to scale.
Mr Dedo Posted February 1, 2017 Posted February 1, 2017 Your craftsmanship is quite amazing. Thanks for sharing.
afx Posted February 1, 2017 Author Posted February 1, 2017 Thanks Jeff-glad you like it. Current mock-up.
dublin boy Posted February 1, 2017 Posted February 1, 2017 (edited) Very nice JC, Great scratch building as always.Ford Transit van hauling it down to the Goodwood Revival maybe? Edited February 1, 2017 by dublin boy
afx Posted February 1, 2017 Author Posted February 1, 2017 (edited) Very nice JC, Great scratch building as always. Thanks Shay. I have a Transit van on order maybe that is what will pull this thing. I want to build a Ranchero at some point, not sure it could handle a loaded trailer though. Edited February 1, 2017 by afx
dublin boy Posted February 1, 2017 Posted February 1, 2017 Glad you got one sorted out, they're quite nice for an 80's kit, I had a good look at one before I sent it across the Pond.
1930fordpickup Posted February 2, 2017 Posted February 2, 2017 Thanks Shay. I have a Transit van on order maybe that is what will pull this thing. I want to build a Ranchero at some point, not sure it could handle a loaded trailer though.I agree about the Ranchero, Nice car-truck but they are not heavy enough to be a pulling a trailer with a car on it. A 57 Ford wagon or another full size wagon would look good with a Cobra behind it. That is if you are going for the 60's-70's track look.
afx Posted February 2, 2017 Author Posted February 2, 2017 The '57 wagon certainly is an option Andy-thanks. And a 60s look is exactly what I am trying to achieve.
afx Posted February 4, 2017 Author Posted February 4, 2017 Thanks Dave. Grabbed the fuel cans and tool box from the current issue of the Ranchero.
Xingu Posted February 4, 2017 Posted February 4, 2017 Should the ramps be stored at the rear of the trailer? Seems like it would be a lot of trouble to get to them, when they are stored up front, if a car were on the trailer. Can't wait to see it all painted.
TarheelRick Posted February 4, 2017 Posted February 4, 2017 Nice looking trailer. That is one of my favorite scratchbuilding subjects. One suggestion I would make, and the kit should have been built this way, is to have a crossmember across the rear of the trailer connecting the two sides. Those two ramps will do quite a bit of oscillating going down a rough road if they are not connected together.
afx Posted February 4, 2017 Author Posted February 4, 2017 Thanks for the interest in the build. Actually since it is a tilt trailer it really shouldn't require loading ramps but I don't want to re-engineer the whole design. I may build a 2nd trailer with a fixed deck.
oldcarfan Posted February 4, 2017 Posted February 4, 2017 You're doing a great job on this, can't wait to see it finished! I need to bust one out of the Impalas that I bought on clearance a while back. Does anyone know if this was a replica of a real trailer or a freelance design? I did the google image search of vintage trailers and didn't see anything really close.
