gtx6970 Posted March 31, 2017 Posted March 31, 2017 (edited) One I've been messing with off and on for about the past six months. We were at a local cruise in last year and this car was there. I knew I had my color combination for the builtup I had stashed away Painted it with Krylon shortcuts Bonnet blue, then 3 coats wet look clear. And hand rubbed with nothing but rubbing compound . The Interior was done last fall, so I'm not real sure where the blue is from. I had originally did the white 1st then taped it up to spray the blue , but had so much bleed under I ended up practically redoing it all by hand with Tamiya white acrylic ( not fun btw ) . Added a shifter and turn signal lever to the column. Carpet is dark blue embossing powder. I bought a bunch of old annuals top boots at a swap meet a little while back and this is one of them. And Ive no idea where its from or how close it is to the correct one. I had initially tried to adapt an up top from the old amt 61 Ford annual but failed miserably,,,,,. so top down it is. Wire wheels and wide whites are from the 1962 Thunderbird kit. The mirror and front fender indicators are from the current Starliner kit Well , there it is. Its far from flawless. But after seeing the 1/1 I had to see how close I could get. Thanks for looking , Comments or criticisms more than welcome. I'm a big boy Edited April 1, 2017 by gtx6970
Sixties Sam Posted March 31, 2017 Posted March 31, 2017 Very good build! Great colors, and the interior is killer! Nice painting on the chassis, which I assume is the one-piece molded unit that those old annuals used. Great work!Sam

The over spray effect was done with a quick pass with a rattle can . Primer 1st, then over spray body color then hand paint the details
carman1 Posted March 31, 2017 Posted March 31, 2017 Very nice job Bill, beautiful car in person and in scale !
Phirewriter Posted April 1, 2017 Posted April 1, 2017 (edited) Wow, that is nice. Just really nice!!!!!!! Makes me think I should stock up on a couple more '62 T-Bird kits just for the rolling stock. Would probably look great on the Starliner hardtop too. Edited April 1, 2017 by Phirewriter
XJ6 Posted April 1, 2017 Posted April 1, 2017 Super Nice...could use one in my collection looking like that.
espo Posted April 1, 2017 Posted April 1, 2017 Turned out beautiful Bill. With your detailing of the chassis you don't realize its an annual until you see the screws holding it together .
gtx6970 Posted April 1, 2017 Author Posted April 1, 2017 (edited) Thanks all for the kind words. Since these pics were taken I took a yellow sharpie to the fender and deck lid nameplates to give them the gold look like on the 1/1 . Its now in the case and I'm lookign around the stash for the next victim . Thinking i need to get back to my 59 Ford Galaxie build. A final parting shot of the 1/1 that was my inspiration. Even in this picture the true color looks a little to white compared to what I remember the actual car was . My phone camera doesn't capture colors as well as I would like . StevenGuthmiller Posted April 1, 2017 Posted April 1, 2017 Very nice Bill! I wonder how popular this "Aquamarine" color was back in 1960. It's absolutely popular with us modelers! I built the new AMT Starliner sometime back & painted it Aquamarine. It seems 75% of all of the '60s that I see are this color. I guess this body style just screams light aqua! Steve
High octane Posted April 1, 2017 Posted April 1, 2017 That Sunliner is beautiful, as I really like the styling change that Ford made after that horrible '59 model.
John Goschke Posted April 1, 2017 Posted April 1, 2017 Really nice build! Nice pix too!I think this color was called "Skymist Blue" in 1960 and is a little lighter than 1959's "Wedgewood Blue." But unless you see them next to each other you'd think they were the same!

gtx6970 Posted April 1, 2017 Author Posted April 1, 2017 Could be. They were pretty close. This is "Aquamarine". Steve This car didn't have any green tint to it at all It was definitely a REALLLLLY light blue .Per the spec sheet I think it was called Surf Foam Blue maybe . The sun was really bright that day and In my pictures the car almost looks white . Where as my kit build isnt as blue as my pictures make it out to be in person. At least how I see them all on my monitor .
gtx6970 Posted April 1, 2017 Author Posted April 1, 2017 (edited) a few more of the 1/1 ,,,maybe it was actually diamond blue as John suggested ? But my gutt tells me its the Surf Foam blue. The mirror closeup probably shows the color the best Ir-regardless ,,, Im not a ford guy but I really liked this car. Edited April 1, 2017 by gtx6970
