mikemodeler Posted September 3, 2017 Posted September 3, 2017 Just saw where Walter Becker of Steely Dan passed away at age 67. He had some undisclosed ailment and a cause of death was not mentioned, but was believed to be what prevented him from touring with Donald Fagen earlier this year. The band in heaven just got another great one, RIP Walter!
waynehulsey Posted September 3, 2017 Posted September 3, 2017 Just saw that. I loved that band. Them and David Bowie pretty much got me through the early-mid 70's with all that country rock and sensitive singer-songwriter stuff. Then finally the Ramones came along. When they got back together and started touring in the 90's I spend way too much money to a scalper to get a ticket. Don't remember what I spend now, but sure do remember that show.
JollySipper Posted September 4, 2017 Posted September 4, 2017 Steely Dan was just in Raleigh, NC a couple years ago........ Really wish I could have gone. I've had the same lyrics in my signature since I joined here, have been a fan since I was a teen and had discovered one of their albums, the one with "Show Biz Kids" on it...
PARTSMARTY Posted September 4, 2017 Posted September 4, 2017 What a tremendous loss of a great talent !!!
Rocking Rodney Rat Posted September 4, 2017 Posted September 4, 2017 I wonder if they ever paid Horace Silver for copping the piano riff in 'Rikki Don't Lose That Number' from this song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CWeXOm49kE0 ? -RRR
afx Posted September 4, 2017 Posted September 4, 2017 Becker released a few solo albums - the only one I own
Maindrian Pace Posted September 5, 2017 Posted September 5, 2017 Aw man, one of my favorite groups ever. Terrible news.
Lunajammer Posted September 5, 2017 Posted September 5, 2017 I wonder if they ever paid Horace Silver for copping the piano riff in 'Rikki Don't Lose That Number' from this song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CWeXOm49kE0 ? -RRRFirst of all, thanks for posting that link. I'd never heard of Horace Silver and I jocked at a jazz station for three years, but that's on me. That's a really cool song! It needs to be in my mix list. However I don't think playing two repeating notes, especially if they're not the same notes, at the front of a song is copping a riff, like Horace did it so he owns it and no one can do that now. Sure sounds like Horace certainly inspired the riff though.
HomerS Posted September 7, 2017 Posted September 7, 2017 Their reunion tour was one of the last concerts I went to. Great show!!(Combination of life a.k.a kids and ticket prices closing in on a car payment stopped my concert attendance)
