afx Posted September 28, 2017 Posted September 28, 2017 Asking if the base model '71 Baracuda could be ordered (maybe by Executive Order) with a Hemi?
Snake45 Posted September 28, 2017 Posted September 28, 2017 Don't think I've ever heard of such a thing, but this is Model World. There's absolutely no reason you can't build a model of one as a "phantom." Chevy never built a '69 low-buck (non-SS) Nova with a 396 and a cowl induction hood, but that doesn't mean there's not one on my workbench.

Rob Hall Posted September 28, 2017 Posted September 28, 2017 In a similar vein, I did see a 'barn find' 383 base trim '70 Challenger on FB the other day, didn't realize big blocks were available on the e-bodies outside of the performance trim (Challenger R/T or Barracuda 'Cuda).
afx Posted September 28, 2017 Author Posted September 28, 2017 If I recall correctly, based on this book, the 383 was available in the base model Barracuda as well.

Snake45 Posted September 28, 2017 Posted September 28, 2017 Sox & Martin's '71 Hemi Cuda/Barracuda didn't have the fender gills, but I have a feeling that's not what you're looking for.
afx Posted September 28, 2017 Author Posted September 28, 2017 (edited) Most '71 Pro Stockers didn't have the gills. Rather than build a new car they just added the grille and valance to update their '70. Edited September 28, 2017 by afx
JollySipper Posted September 28, 2017 Posted September 28, 2017 What you could get was an E body Barracuda and Challenger with a slant 6!
Xingu Posted September 29, 2017 Posted September 29, 2017 What you could get was an E body Barracuda and Challenger with a slant 6! I have only seen one Challenger like that, I think it was a 3-speed manual. My new garage will be built in about a month. I will then start looking for a '71 'Cuda to put in it. It will have fender gills, rear wing, big engine, and a drop top. I want a driver more than a show car, so I may get lucky enough to get one at a reasonable price (probably not).

A real 71 Cuda vert, ( no matter what engine) is not going to be cheap

If you'll notice most didn't even have side markers The early version of Sox and Martins 1971 , even still retained the 70 hood scoop Edited December 9, 2017 by gtx6970
afx Posted September 29, 2017 Author Posted September 29, 2017 I've read they acid dipped the bodies like they did in Trans-Am. Maybe they were concerned that the gill opening wouldn't hold up to such treatment.

afx Posted September 29, 2017 Author Posted September 29, 2017 More likely, the gills ate up too much valuable decal (sponsor) real estate. And/or they didn't want to waste any of the racing budget re-painting front fenders.
gtx6970 Posted September 29, 2017 Posted September 29, 2017 More likely, the gills ate up too much valuable decal (sponsor) real estate. This, and the fact they were 'usually ' just updated 1970 models.
oldcarfan Posted September 30, 2017 Posted September 30, 2017 I vaguely remember maybe 20 years ago that there were a couple of early 1971 Barracudas, Challengers made, but I haven't heard anything to back that up.
