Hi,

Many of the AMT images seem empty but the splash page has this image on it.

Would any one happen to know what race car that is?  Looks sorta like a Javelin?

You know I would chime in.  It's a stock street body with a race car interior which is supposed to replicate the car Warren Tope raced in 1973.  As you can see from pictures the race car had wider body work and a pretty hopped up engine.  It's a multi-color paint scheme so it's a challenging build but one I would to do eventually.   The large AMT decals on the box art cannot be found in any pictures of the real car.

Guess I missed a picture.  There are not a lot online of this car.  There were a few other 71-73's that raced in other series.

Hi,

Dayam those are some killer meats, and fender wells I might add.

I was looking at Reliable Resins and there Street meats #4 look to be a very nice fit for the rears.

Too bad the have a very poor track record in customer satisfaction.

I'd call the cleanbuild a nice tribute.  The rac car had a different grille, black spoiler, fender flares, no rear gas gap, rear window braces, and wider rear wheels. I'm not sure about the air box, location of the battery and the front bumper (chrome or aluminum or other). I suspect the gas tank was probably replaced with a fuel cell.  So, the builder has to decide to build a modified street car of full blow race car with many modifications.   The picture I posted above (Randy Ayer build) got very close to the latter from what I can see.  Here is another build for fun which has its share of issues.

Hi,

The thread that this rather excellent build belongs to mentions the MPC version being a better kit all around.  Although based on some research, it also lacks fender flares.

Odd that no one has kitted an accurate rendition of this seemingly iconic racer.

Actually, I would use something like the AMT Modified tires. They are actual race tires vs. the MT Street tires.

Not my model, only using for reference

Hi,

Oooo, nice pic and idea.

Thank you!

I am starting on this kit.  Not very impressive.  Going to just do a box stock version since it's so far removed from the real car.  It is a shame that the mfrs don't step up and do some nice (new kit tech) Trans Am racers.  Not a lot of net pics of this car either to use for reference.  A few but not a lot.  Enough to show that the kit is no where near the real car.

It is a "Dog's Breakfast" of a kit. A Mish-Mash of leftover parts, odd bits and the residue of three or four different versions over the years. Many Great parts, esp on the chrome tree, but not a great kit overall, IMHO. I've read some strong critiques of the accuracy of the body shapes, and the grille and bumpers. Supposedly the bumpers are an odd mixture of '71,&'73 features, meaning they are not correct for either year. There are enough parts in the box to assemble a complete model car, but it is in no way, shape or form, an accurate replica of any real car. Racer or otherwise.

Both the AMT and MPC kits have too many faults to list but are pretty similar.  To make a good street version you need an accurate front bumper, grille and of course a real 351C or 429CJ engine would be a bonus but neither kit ever had one.  Motorcity Resin sells correct grilles and bumpers on ebay and Keith Marks has decals there are few alternatives (old Fred Cady).  I am currently working on a stock MPC 73 Mach1 with an outsourced 351C, grafting a 67/70 Revell engine compartment.  No matter what you build (street or race car) be prepared to fix as many shortcomings as you want.  My #1 gripe with the MPC kit is the vents in the hood.  No 71/73 Mustang had these vents.
