mchook Posted December 9, 2017 Posted December 9, 2017 I'm going to try to build this type of power unit. When I was a kid my father had a couple of these that he used when he was a kid to cut firewood. They were belt driven to an old buzz saw. He used the Model T one for an engine stand for years too. The Model A was mounted on the back of an old 37 Chevy running Chassis. I'm not sure if we have any pictures of them, I'll have to check. I don't have much done yet, but here's what I have so far.
mod3l Lover Posted December 9, 2017 Posted December 9, 2017 MJ, that is looking very cool! I will follow along to see this get built for sure!! David S.
Dennis Lacy Posted December 9, 2017 Posted December 9, 2017 Very neat project! Great work building the pedals and belt drive. At first I was surprised to see the trans and pedals intact then it occurred to me that you could run the saw at 3 different speads.
Johnt671 Posted December 10, 2017 Posted December 10, 2017 That's different. nice work on a good idea.
doggie427 Posted December 11, 2017 Posted December 11, 2017 Very cool ! Nice start to an interesting project.
mchook Posted December 18, 2017 Author Posted December 18, 2017 I haven't had a lot of time to work on this but I did get some paint on & a little more stuff...
El Caballo Posted December 18, 2017 Posted December 18, 2017 I grew up in rural Maine and there was a guy who had one of those as a PTO setup like you are talking about on a Model AA truck.
misterNNL Posted December 18, 2017 Posted December 18, 2017 Very original project. Engine is looking great with realistic details. Thanks for sharing.
mod3l Lover Posted December 19, 2017 Posted December 19, 2017 I just love this build!! It belongs in museum of cool minitures of some kind. Thanks for sharing, and even inspiring us!! David S.
Eric Macleod Posted December 24, 2017 Posted December 24, 2017 I couldn't agree more with the others. This will be interesting. So far the engine looks the part.
Mattblack Posted December 25, 2017 Posted December 25, 2017 Very cool and different project! I have a 'thing' for stationary engines, was that set up a factory produced thing, a kit or home brewed?
waynehulsey Posted December 25, 2017 Posted December 25, 2017 Interesting project. Have photographed several at various tractor and engine shows. Here's a couple of shots of a Model A engine converted to an air compressor by Gordon Smith.
mchook Posted December 30, 2017 Author Posted December 30, 2017 Wow , thanks for all the great comments. I didn't think anyone would be interested in this type of build, it's not a cool hot rod or muscle car. On 12/25/2017 at 5:00 AM, Mattblack said: Very cool and different project! The Model A we had as a kid was a cut off car chassis with a cowl & the part for the transmission. The Model T was a cart conversion like this. His was a B model cut off with the Gordon Head. I'll see if I can find some pics of it. So I got the cart about finished, I need to make a battery box, a few more brackets and get some paint on it. It's still a little cold ( about 6 degrees) so I don't see any paint getting on it today.
Modelbuilder Mark Posted December 30, 2017 Posted December 30, 2017 Coming along very nicely. Great scratch building
GerN Posted December 30, 2017 Posted December 30, 2017 Just wonderful. A real holiday gift for the rest of us.

mchook Posted January 18, 2018 Author Posted January 18, 2018 I'm about finished with this part. It still needs a fuel line, choke, throttle & spark lever. Next I'll make a buzz saw to go with it.
Modelbuilder Mark Posted January 21, 2018 Posted January 21, 2018 Looks really good. What technique did you use on the wheels? They look great.
