absmiami Posted April 5, 2022 Author Posted April 5, 2022 Straightliner: how’s this ?? The grill pattern is doubled photo-etch pattern from an acustion sheet that I’ve had for years - just right for pre war grand prix machines - their stuff is no longer made (i think) but this pattern has also been produced by some other photo etch sellers …
absmiami Posted April 5, 2022 Author Posted April 5, 2022 Oh dear. Page 13. …. bugatti: Pico is a sucker for anything French, old, and obscure - as am I - as for the Mullin collection Delage - my next Delage build will be a ‘27 Delage straight eight GP - starting with the white metal Finecast kit - there are 4/5 survivors - this one gracing the Rev’s Collection in Naples …. Actually its one of the early additions to what was once known as the Collier collection…
absmiami Posted April 5, 2022 Author Posted April 5, 2022 bugatti part II: assume you’ve seen the ERA scale drawings that are floating around the ‘net … and there is still available a rather nice curbside wh metal kit by the same English kit makers that produce the Delage ‘27 kit …. Which begs for a nice scratchbuilt supercharged engine …
absmiami Posted April 5, 2022 Author Posted April 5, 2022 Bugatti part III: and thank you for your scale question - i dont get enough questions/wish i got more …. Yes it is 24th scale …. The ONLY proper scale, right ??
absmiami Posted April 5, 2022 Author Posted April 5, 2022 Bugatti part iv: Romulus - As you surely know - was in Prince Bira’s wonderful stable of pre-war and just post-war open wheel race cars - when you start Romulus - i just mite start his gorgeous blue Maserati 8CM - there is no kit - but I do have a “plan” …
absmiami Posted April 9, 2022 Author Posted April 9, 2022 well. Here’s a little excitement / the front axle wheelbase is off by at least 3 scale inches …
absmiami Posted April 9, 2022 Author Posted April 9, 2022 So the fix required a trim of the plastic axle “sleeve” - and re-bending the brass rod - and it worked …. After some tweeks and paint ill have the correct wheel base …
absmiami Posted April 10, 2022 Author Posted April 10, 2022 The Delage has a panel at the front of the frame that has a machine turned finish - this is my next problem - ive applied a panel of bare metal foil - ive got some old stock that i think/hope has enough adhesive - its on and im going to experiment with some rubber burs to see if i can leave rows of machine turned swirls …

While I have had some success at creating it, I haven't found a way that I have fallen in love with, by any means!
Bugatti Fan Posted April 10, 2022 Posted April 10, 2022 Andrew, thanks for your multiple replies. So far I have not looked for any ERA plans on the web, but thanks for letting me know they are available. Do you happen to know the site they are on?
absmiami Posted April 10, 2022 Author Posted April 10, 2022 Slotracer.online. Has many (all?) of the drawings from the English Model Cars mag published in the sixties and part way into the seventies - these are great flea market / model show vendor finds - and are also floating around the internet …
Straightliner59 Posted April 11, 2022 Posted April 11, 2022 Nice! If for no other reason (and there are plenty!) than I love line drawings of things mechanical!
Bugatti Fan Posted April 11, 2022 Posted April 11, 2022 Thanks for the further feedback about the ERA drawings Andrew.
absmiami Posted April 12, 2022 Author Posted April 12, 2022 I’ve applied some engine turned patterns with a rubber “bur” chucked into my Foredom … worked sort of - without the abilty to tape a “guide” to the surface of this panel - the swirl pattern wanders around - it should appear as nice neat rows - like a field of crops viewed from the air - didnt get this look - but I’ll seal it and apply a clear blue finish … onward …
absmiami Posted April 12, 2022 Author Posted April 12, 2022 Front suspension - hubs, carriers, uprights - painted w Tamiya silver and Ukraine Air Force blue …. Masked with Parafilm - some bleed-over on the uprights - to be corrected
absmiami Posted April 12, 2022 Author Posted April 12, 2022 This time w Tamiya masking tape strips- got sharper lines silver/blue on the uprights - problem fixed …

I don't recall what I used as an abrasive, though. It may have been the erasers that came with the power eraser I'd bought, earlier, in the same pursuit. I intend to try Scott Colmer's use of cloth-backed polishing sheet(s) in ultra-fine grits (1200+), mounted to small dowels, or perhaps aluminum or brass rod. I would think that light pressure would be preferable, no matter which shaft is used. So far, every method I've experimented with has been a complete pain in the anus, and results were hit-and-miss. absmiami Posted April 14, 2022 Author Posted April 14, 2022 Your method - or Colmer’s - are great for a flat surface peice of aluminum that you then place onto the model - when i apply this finish to the metal body work i can’t use a fixed tool attached to a mill or a work station - but ill use a hand peice and some sort of guide taped to the surface of the body- meantime - ive air brushed a mix of clear and transparent blue to this front panel - not sure how well it shows on a photo - all of this car’s bodywork had this unique blue varnished finish -
Straightliner59 Posted April 15, 2022 Posted April 15, 2022 I see what you mean. That's a very odd shape that doesn't lend itself well to using a flat piece. At least short of a complete scratchbuild. I like the blue varnish.
absmiami Posted April 15, 2022 Author Posted April 15, 2022 Back in Black … prepping the radiator shell for the shiny stuff - using Alclad Black - frame is covered in para-film …
absmiami Posted April 16, 2022 Author Posted April 16, 2022 Dept of Corrections …. The first wire wheel that i laced used steel wire rather than fishing line - not so good - ive clipped apart the offending wires - no damage to the rim - its now ready for a new set of fishing line wires ….
absmiami Posted April 17, 2022 Author Posted April 17, 2022 The wiring pattern was posted by Pico on an earlier page - wired while i had a college baseball game on the radio … 1st inning …
absmiami Posted April 17, 2022 Author Posted April 17, 2022 The hub - per a pre pandemic post - was alu turned in a sherline lathe … 2nd inning …
