Twokidsnosleep Posted April 17, 2018 Author Posted April 17, 2018 (edited) A bit of a setback on this build. I have FUDGED up the Gravity Clear coat somehow...my suspicion is water contamination as my trap had standing water in it after the disaster and painted on a pouring wet day. I tried a sand off, but cannot get the paint shiny enough and it would be a pain to sand the entire body...so oven cleaner, strip and repaint Edited April 17, 2018 by Twokidsnosleep
Dann Tier Posted April 17, 2018 Posted April 17, 2018 BLAH_BLAH_BLAH_BLAH, dude!! that really sucks!!, sorry it happened to you, but you'll make it even better!!!
Belugawrx Posted April 17, 2018 Posted April 17, 2018 Thankfully it's just the hood.... Just the hood Scott?
Twokidsnosleep Posted April 17, 2018 Author Posted April 17, 2018 Nope it is the body as well Thought it was the red paint layer, but I am suspecting some water in the air line and the clear went wonky. You are dead on; I will strip it, repaint and clear and make it even better
Bernard Kron Posted April 17, 2018 Posted April 17, 2018 The paint malfunction is a heartbreaker, but judging by what preceded it I'm sure your assurance that the re-do will be "even better" is doubtless no idle promise. In the meantime everything so far is so very nice. I'm just getting into this style of build and following each one I encounter, just soaking it all in...

Thanks Bernard I am a bit of a glutton for punishment...knock me down and I come back up swinging harder . So the repaint WILL be better
ismaelg Posted April 18, 2018 Posted April 18, 2018 By any chance, was that urethane based clear? Has it been sitting for a long time? I've heard that type of clear has a relatively short shelf life. I wonder if that could have been a factor. Now I'm a little concerned about my Gravity Clear as it has been sitting for almost a year. Thanks,

Thanks, Yes, it was Gravity clear. I am going to retest after I get a secondary inline moisture trap My guts say it was water contamination not the clear itself. Some areas of the body were perfect, smooth and shiny, others wrinkly and orange peeled
Twokidsnosleep Posted April 18, 2018 Author Posted April 18, 2018 Stripped out decently, but more wet sanding to go before I re-prime the body
Twokidsnosleep Posted April 21, 2018 Author Posted April 21, 2018 So I bought a little in line filter and tested it out.....cheap off of AMAZON After doing a test spay, I tore it all apart just to have a look.....my main moisture trap is soaking wet again, there is moisture on the top o-ring of the in-line filter and when I blow air without the airbrush attatched, it blows wet air out so definitely a water issue with me spraying. I tore it all apart to let it dry out. So I am pretty positive I got moisture contamination spraying the 2k
Twokidsnosleep Posted April 22, 2018 Author Posted April 22, 2018 Got her back to grey primer, she is pretty smooth. I forgot to spray the hood Going to do a light yellow layer and then Tamiya TS-8 Italian Red

I know this is a silly question, but does your compressor have a tank, and if so, have you drained it? It's amazing how much water will accumulate in a tank in a short time.

Ya, I know what to watch for in my equipment now. A bit of moisture isn’t a big deal for Stylenrez or Tamiya, but it is a killer for the 2 part epoxy clears! I have the body and hood sprayed in a light yellow layer. Decision time....same Tamiya with Mr levelling thinner; TS-Italian red out of spray spray can; TS IR decanted and shot through the airbrush Not sure yet what I will do, letting my primer/base layers set up well. Likely will go for the latter one if I can find the right straw for decanting. Edited April 24, 2018 by Twokidsnosleep
Twokidsnosleep Posted April 26, 2018 Author Posted April 26, 2018 Yellow base coat on now and I decanted the Tamiya TS-8 Hoping to spray some red tonight
Dann Tier Posted April 26, 2018 Posted April 26, 2018 That looks NICE!!!!.......yellow suits this car as well!
Twokidsnosleep Posted April 28, 2018 Author Posted April 28, 2018 Got a new red dress on her last night
Twokidsnosleep Posted April 28, 2018 Author Posted April 28, 2018 Had my doubts I could pull this off, but I did GX 122 up cut clear on her this morning. Might try a little polish after it cures overnight whew
oldcarfan Posted April 29, 2018 Posted April 29, 2018 Love that interior. I've got those fine tip Sharpies, but I also have a shaky hand, so I don't do very well with it. You did great though!

Unfortuntely I have thumbs that are extremely attracted to CA glue and fingerprints that must be left into shiny smooth paint...every freaking time Edited April 29, 2018 by Twokidsnosleep
Dann Tier Posted April 30, 2018 Posted April 30, 2018 Such attention to details, and klean execution!...cant stop looking at it actually!! lol -its BRILLIANT!!

It looks awesome Thank you, no the folded top is just sprayed some flat black, I guess it's just nicely molded by Fujimi!
Twokidsnosleep Posted May 1, 2018 Author Posted May 1, 2018 S'all right..kind sick of her at this point, lots of fitment fight. My BMF must be dead as some of it just crumbles and rips rather than smooths and the front bumpers look ridiculous on her body and I might put the side mirrors on, but no side indicators. I will finish the little bits later. I had a flashback to the old Gumball Rally Movie of the 70's trying to fit the rearview mirror, then threw it away and said.... "what is behind me, it does not matter" Still searching for that perfect, clean build where I get everything to just...work
