youpey Posted April 19, 2018 Posted April 19, 2018 are there any good model stores within 2 or so hours of nj. I am talking store with huge selection of models. more than just a hobby lobby has. Like a mix of old and new models. there used to be one in north jersey, but they closed down a few years ago
SfanGoch Posted April 19, 2018 Posted April 19, 2018 Being that you're from Jersey, you should know the answer to that. Those days of browsing through the shelves are becoming memories now. Nothing in NYC anymore. The shops in NJ are likewise defunct. The few places left, like Jan's Hobby Shop on the UES, aren't worth the trouble because you'll get gouged big time. There's a place in Astoria, Queens called ModelCars.com. It's primarily a mail order operation; but, it has a physical location: 3801 23rd Avenue #407 Astoria, NY 11105 The model car selection is pretty decent, as are the prices. If you do decide to drop by, don't expect a regular hobby shop layout. It is, like I said, primarily a mail order business. They'll let you use a ladder to check out what's on the shelves. If you want something not in stock, they'll order it for you.
peter31a Posted April 19, 2018 Posted April 19, 2018 I know there is Tech Toys which is not far from the NNL East venue. I believe an RC shop but it also has a large model selection. Haven't been there in awhile but have recently seen someone recommending in another forum/Facebook (I forget where exactly).
youpey Posted April 19, 2018 Author Posted April 19, 2018 my birthday is coming up and i wanted to go to a model store to pick out some fresh models and paint. i live in NJ and was willing to drive around 2 hours to a good place, but it seems like maybe that is a thing of the past

I know of nothing that way, but if you're ever in or near Buffalo there's at least one brick and mortar left standing. Section 8 Hobbies. They have a website of course but Justin has a very full shop. Lots of kits from cars/planes/armour and sci-fi as well. Well stocked with a lot of different paint brands. Not sure how far away it is for you, but Im sure it's farther than 2hrs. He does ship and usually had a 15% code for online and a lot of the time has a 25% off for walk ins. I try to stop there whenever I'm over the border.
CapSat 6 Posted April 19, 2018 Posted April 19, 2018 If you want to venture into PA, there is Nicholas Smith Trains and Hobbies. They’re in Newtown Square, PA. Large selection of auto kits. Mostly new stuff, but a few older (last 5 or so years) releases are there, too. Staff is nice, it’s a large store with toys, slot cars, Lego, some die casts, and a huge Train section upstairs.
CapSat 6 Posted April 19, 2018 Posted April 19, 2018 Another one in PA with a good selection (all new stuff, though) is Modelbahn Ott in Boyertown, PA. All of the actual hobby stores we used to have are folding up, unfortunately.

Brett Barrow Posted April 19, 2018 Posted April 19, 2018 There's AAA Hobbies in Magnolia, South Jersey. Ok, maybe I'm a bit biased since I work there part time but they're the retail arm of Stevens International so they have access to everything they carry and that's pretty much all current model car companies. No old stuff, though.
Tom Geiger Posted April 19, 2018 Posted April 19, 2018 In Wayne, New Jersey there's a place with two full gymnasiums worth of new kits, old kits, resin and aftermarket parts and decals from the best vendors in the country. It's called NNL East. There will also be two gymnasiums full of display models built by the best builders in the country, who will be happy to meet you. It's this Saturday, and if you are in New Jersey there's no excuse not to be there! Full details on the website: www.nnleast.com
