62SS Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 I always liked the MPC boxes from the late 60s. The ones with the big "license plate" looking dates on them. I have a couple of them and the artwork is pretty good. Ed
Kodiak Island Modeler Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 For cars I would go with the 1962 AMT kits in the pink boxes. For trucks, it's a tie between the Original Ford L short hauler (yellow backed to a loading dock) and the original Pete 352 also corresponding tank trailer (both placed in refinery setting).
Jairus Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 Tom Daniel's stuff always impressed me and inspired me to do my best work. Such as this one:
Crazy Ed Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 (edited) I really like this one because it so different that the normal product shot. Harsh contrast that forces you to concentrate on the lines. http://public.fotki.com/CrazyEd/models/917.html Ed Erbeck Jr. Edited August 1, 2008 by Crazy Ed
samdiego Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 (edited) Vintage? I would have to say the original Lil' Coffin. Modern? I think the Revell Merc is a great looking box, although I'm not crazy about the flat style Edited August 1, 2008 by samdiego
HotRodaSaurus Posted August 1, 2008 Author Posted August 1, 2008 Tom Daniel's stuff always impressed me and inspired me to do my best work. Such as this one: Jarius I love it ! I can see Tom Daniels influence for sure. There is a Paddy Wagon hiding there I know it, one of my favourite TD kits. J
FloridaBoy Posted August 14, 2008 Posted August 14, 2008 I am an "oldie goldie" so some of my favorite box art is very old, and probably sentimental. So, from an old guy............... Revell '32 Ford 3-Window Revell '40 Ford Convertible Pro Modeler Revell '40 Ford Standard Coupe Street Rod "Hot Rod" Magazine Series AMT Original Issue circa 1960 '40 Ford Coupe (blue street rod coupe with flames) AMT Original Issue circa 1961 '40 Ford Sedan AMT "Street Rods" Series '40 Ford Coupe (green coupe on top - great angle) Johan 1971 issue of Mickey Thompson "Titanium Pinto" (purple box) - one of best funny car kits ever!!! AMT most recent issue of 1950 Ford Convertible Ken "FloridaBoy" Willaman
Eshaver Posted August 14, 2008 Posted August 14, 2008 I have to agree with a couple of folks on page one. Yhe A M T 1968 art work was suitable for framing. I also ,liked the Aroura 1934 Ford box, only be cause it showed a very rare Martin and shartz gasoline pump which was made to be housed in a brick enclosure. There was only one other pump company to offer this type of pump in the 1930's. That pump company was Erie Meter systems. EdShaver
Berk765 Posted August 15, 2008 Posted August 15, 2008 Don't know if anyone has had this discussion so here goes. Like a book with an exciting cover, box art pursuaded me which model I would buy next Who in your opinion is the greatest/favoutire box artist and what model. Models can vary IE Aurora's Horror stars(Dracula, Mummy Black lagoon etc, Monograms early Hot Rod series(Yellow Jacket, Blue Beetle etc) AMT Annuals, Revells Funny Car series, Tom Daniel, you know the score here guys and gals. And do you have a favourite artist? I dont know many so I may learn something here. Here is my fave list of boxes. If you know an artist missing let me know who he/she is please. Thanks, John. My All time fave box art of ANY kit .......AIRFIX B17G Flying Fortress. Fantastic artwork by Roy Cross. On a bomb run, engine on fire, guns blazing this has the lot to tempt anyone into modeling. 2nd fave and favourite car box Hot Rod Kit.....Li'l Coffin(1970s version). The model with the scary scene of dead trees and houses and the so CooooooL skeleton leaning on the car. Artist unknown 3rd fave is the 1957 Revell Cadillac Eldorado Brougham. Artist Jack Lynnwood? If I had to pick a moden box artist I will go with the Japanese guy that signs himself Okamoto I like the one of the '98 Mustang Cobra. Not the picture on the front of the box, but the smaller one on the side where it looks like it's in a showroom.
Mr. Moparman Posted June 16, 2012 Posted June 16, 2012 I think there is a story behind this box art, somebody will probably post it. I think the boxes designer had sent the box art to the decal deptartment to have the decals made before he got the box approved by his boss, I can't remember the whole thing.
Wayne Buck Posted June 16, 2012 Posted June 16, 2012 Definitely one of my favorites. Much cooler than a picture of the model built and just sitting there... Just looking at it, it's almost like you can feel the ground shake and hear the sounds!
rmvw guy Posted June 16, 2012 Posted June 16, 2012 (edited) Yes, one of my favorites also, it may have inspired me to make my first car a '55. I was about 13 years old when the kit came out. Edited June 16, 2012 by rmvw guy
Austin T Posted June 16, 2012 Posted June 16, 2012 Almost any of the old AMT kit boxes are gorgeous. Also lots of the old AMT semi's.
philo426 Posted June 17, 2012 Posted June 17, 2012 Wow! that AMT Police car box conveys a sense of action and drama!
Bartster Posted June 17, 2012 Posted June 17, 2012 How about Tom Daniel's street fighter. I heard it was reissued with the original box art. lt was my 1st kit when it was new. l have one on the way, but still haven't seen it yet.
1272148 Posted June 17, 2012 Posted June 17, 2012 The li'l gypsy wagon, one of the odd show rod kits that came from amt during the seventies.
Scott Colmer Posted June 17, 2012 Posted June 17, 2012 This has the making of a great thread. Greg, I actually bought the 55 empty box because the art is so cool. The story on that one is the name on the door. Big R racing is for Revell. I think Bob Paeth and another designer are in there too. Callon, that Gypsy wagon is a great one. Tom Daniels has some good ones too. The original Cherry Bomb is one. Some of my favorites. The MCP (AMT?) box with the red convertible gasser vette in a overview shot. Still looking for that box at a reasonable price. And this thread must include the Miss Deal. The front on IVO FED is another good one. Scott
Maindrian Pace Posted June 17, 2012 Posted June 17, 2012 I always liked AMT's less is more approach. -MJS
my name is nobody Posted June 17, 2012 Posted June 17, 2012 I like the old Johan boxes. The Rapid Transit System art was cool.
W-409 Posted June 17, 2012 Posted June 17, 2012 I like this one so much that I had to put my JoHan's Cuda box on the display cabinet.
