Monogram also reissued Aurora's Maserati 3500 GT (Kit No. 2245) and Aston Martin DB-4 (Kit No. 2246) both of which are excellent models. Edited August 30, 2018 by SfanGoch

This is way out wishful thinking, but could it be that the tooling for that '61 Chrysler Slant Six is out there? I have one, but wouldn't it be cool to see THAT back on the hobby shelves?? Problem is there aren't very many people under 45 that may even know what that is. But to us 'Boomers' that rode in Mopars that had 'em, they're unmistakable! In sound and in looks! What he said.
Brett Barrow Posted August 30, 2018 Posted August 30, 2018 Up through 93 I'm guessing would include the rather short-lived Oldsmobile that was done right as Olds was leaving the sport? I think it was only done as Joe Ruttman's Dinner Bell 75 and in the Morgan-McClure Kodak combo as Ernie Irvan's #4. It used the more modern chassis from the Lumina rather than the older chassis shared by the other GM kits. I'm pretty sure that's the only Monogram NASCAR kit I never built as a kid.

I don't think that'd be a great idea to reissue it, even it it did exist. $100+/kit, needs to be (well, should be) run in three colors like the original, and as you mentioned, how many die-hard Slant Six fans are out there and willing to pay for this kit? Could they even sell 500 copies? 1000?? I honestly think the secondary market can supply 99.3% of the desire for this kit. Now, if that 1/4 scale Chevy V-8 still exists...LOAD UP THE PELLETS!

It may not, Mike (of Mike's Decal) seems to think the Lumina is NOT part of what they got, probably owing to the fact the chassis went on to underpin the Monte Carlo that came in 1995, but was reissued well into the 2000s past when the tooling was sent overseas. The body cavities might be here, but the rest of it probably isn't - which mean that Olds Cutlass Supreme doesn't have any innards either unfortunately.

Yeah, it shared the same chassis with the Lumina, you are correct

Well Blitzvell only paid $49,999 for ALL of the tooling. How much could the scratch n dent bargain bin unwanted tooling have possibly cost Atlantis. That stuff they bought will pay for itself with a successful run of one or two of the tools I would imagine. I bet Salvinos JR got a screaming deal on the NASCAR stuff being they were buying it off the guys who bought it off the people who basically paid nothing for it in the first place.
Dave Van Posted August 30, 2018 Posted August 30, 2018 No Lumina = no Olds....... BUT.....it depends....I was always under the impression the Monte Carlo chassis was cloned off the Lumina. The Monte version was much softer in detail and had screw mounts for the body the Lumina didn't. Add to it the Lumina tool was a USA cut tool....the Monte Carlo a China based tool. We'll see.....

You know, I've still never seen that kit in the flesh. I remember pining for it after seeing it in the 92(?) catalog and going to every local plastic pusher looking for one and by then Oldsmobile had left and I was sure it would never actually come out. It wasn't until the internet came along that I was able to look it up and see that it did really exist. I know, I can go on ebay and get one for $10 but it'll never be the same as it would have been had I actually found one on the shelf. That kit was my white whale for years.

Yeah I remember those later Montes were not quite as nice as the Lumina. That Lumina blew me away when it came out especially comparing it to the other Monogram and AMT NASCAR kits at the time.
niteowl7710 Posted August 30, 2018 Posted August 30, 2018 Does anyone know the exact drop dead date of when the tools were shipped to China because the square body T-Bird, and Pontiac Grand Prix were both run as part of the "Legends of NASCAR" series of kits in the late 90s.

The Earnhardt squarebird from that series says made in the usa on it. Edit: I see a 2002 Jeff Gordon Monte on ebay that still says made in the USA that's the latest I've been able to confirm. Found a 2003 Dale Jr that says Made in China. Edited August 30, 2018 by Brett Barrow
Dave Van Posted August 30, 2018 Posted August 30, 2018 Brett beat me.....I went downstairs and the DE Sr Squarebird is a USA kit.....that's good I hope.
Rob Hall Posted August 30, 2018 Posted August 30, 2018 IIRC also, wasn't that '80-82 style Thunderbird a later addition to the Monogram line...I don't think it was originally out in the early 80s w/ the Regal, Monte Carlo and Grand Prix..

Correct. The 1983 style was released with the Regal. The Earnhardt Wrangler car and Elliott Melling car. As far as the Lumina goes, could there be a connection with Days of Thunder? Possibly a licensing issue? Edited August 30, 2018 by Model Truck Shop

I have a set of drawings for the 82 Bird that Bob Johnson did off the real car. It was done AFTER the 83, 87 and 89 Birds. The real car was Bill Elliott's Riverside winner which was owned by a neighbor of mine in NC. It is based of the 83-87-89 chassis.

The Lumina was released as D.E.s car, Darrel Waltrip, Ricky Rudd's Tide & Derrick Cope's Daytona 500 car (at least) in the early 90s after the three DoT kits. Edited August 30, 2018 by niteowl7710
Dave Van Posted August 30, 2018 Posted August 30, 2018 Was the Cope Lumina a limited kit??? I don't think I have it......thx

niteowl7710 Posted August 30, 2018 Posted August 30, 2018 Rick Salvino made a post on FB that they do in fact HAVE the Lumina, so assuming the Cutlass Supreme body and whatnot are still around, the guts are in possession.
R.J Posted August 30, 2018 Posted August 30, 2018 The Lumina was released as a generic White kit also if memory serves me.
Daddyfink Posted August 30, 2018 Posted August 30, 2018 2 minutes ago, R.J said: The Lumina was released as a generic White kit also if memory serves me. Yes sir, released during the great Slixx Decals promotion that I don't think anyone used
Daddyfink Posted August 30, 2018 Posted August 30, 2018 So, who has the early, 70's, Drag subjects? China, Germany or ...?

Regarding Revell U.S. molds, it sounds/reads like..: Blitz retained all molds already in China J.R. Salvino's now owns the '80-'92-ish NASCAR stuff Atlantis now owns (some? all??) molds which were only used or stored in Illinois. It's unclear to me if Blitz retained some of the molds which were stored in Illinois, however. Looking at the box sides of reissued kits might help decipher where each kit was produced, and who now likely owns the molds for each kit. For example, the recently reissued Tom McEwen R/E T/F Dragster, which is marked "PLASTIC PARTS MADE IN THE U.S.A.", so this should be in Atlantis' possession (unless Blitz retained it): 1/24 Datsun 4x4, also molded in the U.S.: Revell 1/24 Mazda RX-7: Clear as mud.
