I don't know how it is in the USA, but in Germany/ Europe new car model kit releases by Italeri nowadays mostly are just re-releases of old Protar (best case) or Esci (worst case) kits. Some current examples being the Lancia Stratos, Lancia Delta Integrale, Ford Escort Mk. 2, Lamborghini Miura (the Esci one with the awful truck-like doors...). Looking forward however to the upcoming (re-)release of the Alfa Romeo 1600 Giulia Spider (originally be Protar). Don't know how I missed this, but you are right, Protars, which I do own, and happen to like ALOT, are being reboxed by other companies.
