Going to be hard to have a proper memorial thread for John McCain while keeping politics completely out of it. So guys, I suggest we try to keep it about John himself and the things he did, and not make comparisons or comments about the political state in general. Sound good?

I lost a cousin and one heck of a great guy on the USS Forrestal so I won't go there.

Despite a widely-circulated, completely dishonest email that circulated several years ago, McCain had ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with starting or causing that fire. The truth is well documented in both film and official reports and plots of the deck at the time of the fire. McCain was in fact a victim of that fire, and was lucky to escape it with his life. If you've been harboring ill feelings toward him as a cause of that fire, please, please let it go--you have been lied to in a most disgusting and slimy way.

Mods, I don't mean this post to be in any way political or disrespectful. I only want to set the record straight about this completely false allegation against the man. Thank you.

John McCain served his country in times of war and in times of peace.  He is a patriot.

My son informed me yesterday that McCain is survived by his mother.  She is 106.

He was my senator when I lived in Arizona, and though I'm not of his political party, I thought he was certainly a patriot above partisan.  RIP, he gave a lot for this country.

Like all Navy & Marine Corps personnel who may deploy on aircraft carriers, many years ago I had to watch the training film "Trial by Fire: A Carrier Fights for Life."  I believe the Navy uses that movie to this very day. It's about the Forrestal fire.  Which was caused by a "Zuni" missile accidentally firing from an F-4 Phantom parked on the deck.  Incredibly, all the safety systems designed to keep that from happening, like the safety pins, somehow failed. The proximate cause was a power surge when the F-4 transitioned from the external electrical system to its own internal system. John McCain flew the A-4 Skyhawk attack aircraft.  He just happened to be sitting in his plane on the Forrestal's deck, when all hell broke loose.

Speaking of power surges...according to a former Marine friend, the Marine Corps had a similar near-disaster at his airfield in Vietnam. A Huey gunship returned to the field with a rocket hung up in one its launcher pods.  A technician ran out to look at it, with a Simpson 260 multimeter.  The Simpson 260 has a 1.5 Volt battery inside.  The rocket launchers were fired by...yes, a 1.5V charge!  Technician connected multimeter to pod and a rocket suddenly went screaming down the airfield.  Luckily it didn't hit anything.
