Not quite the elaborate and detailed piece as some of the works of art on here but here's my "speed shop" so far. I'm just not sure about wall height. I don't know if I want lower walls to show room details when finished, regular height walls for realistic uniformity, or a combination of lower side to side walls and regular front to back walls to establish the borders and also show details.

Anyways, it's made completely out of 3/16" foam board. The base is a 20"x 30" piece. Across the back will either be a "paint booth setup" or a "detailer's station". Next to that is the "break room area", and then two restrooms will complete the back wall. Plans for the break room will include a refrigerator,  a table or two, some chairs, and a counter and sink. Other details such as microwave will be added as well whenever I can come across such items or make them. The restrooms will have a stall with toilet, as well as a urinal, and a sink in each one and probably a mirror.

The front part of the shop will have the main working area bordering the booth and break room. All sorts of tools, chests, and parts will be added here. Next to that will be an office area with furniture, and next to that the reception/waiting area with maybe a vending machine or two. A set of stairs will also be incorporated somewhere to lead to an upstairs storage area, so I will probably have to re-think the height of the outside walls.

The wall and floor designs are various sheets of scrap book paper I found at Hobby Lobby that come in 12"x 12" sheets that can be found on sale for 4/$1.00. The checkered floor is not glued down just yet until I figure out wall height, and the two cars are both 1/25 scale for size comparison. Right now this is a pretty simple and low budget project that I'm sure will escalate when I start adding the tools and most likely figures to the mix, but at the moment it's just good cheap fun.

Every time I try to build a speed shop diorama it just keeps getting bigger and bigger. Just like with 1:1, I always run out of room. Keep up the good work!

I am going to assume some time you will want to photograph your models in the garage from a scale eye level and then you will want to have the high walls.

Yup, my mind is already making improvements and alterations before my hands can do the original work, or worse right after, LOL.

Most likely, although I do have a smaller one done already for that purpose. It just depends on how this one turns out and which "background" I like the best. I am leaning toward the "standard height' walls.

Decided on standard height walls. Also got "my office" situated. Just need some more scrap book paper to finish decorating the rest of the walls before permanently placing them. Then probably slowly start adding some furniture, equipment and people.

Clive Cussler reader I see.

My issue on bldg. things like this is, where to put them when done. Looks good, keep it moving.

And a few others I read as well. If I may, here's how I store mine, on a shelf which pulls out of a bookcase.

Absolutely, reading Poseiden's Arrow currently at the time of this post. As far as where to put it when finished, I haven't thought ahead that far, LOL.

Craig, I put in on the pull out shelf because it makes it easier to reach in the back, it give it more light for photos and you can shoot from the ends giving different angles.

Pretty good idea.

I'm not doing anything else on this until I have a place to display it, but I am collecting and painting pieces to add to it when done. I just painted and "assembled" these tool chests, engine hoists and doors that I got from Make It RC on ebay, I need some clear green to finish the Drag Race Christmas Tree.. Cool pieces and great prices. I'll probably buy a few other items from them in the near future. I got the cabinets that I put in black primer from BCS-trading (now BCSmodels.com) on ebay, and the basset hound figures to replicate my real dogs from Three Inches Under, also on ebay.

That's a very good idea and definitely worth looking into.

I cover my dios with a piece of light weight bed sheet material to help keep them less dusty as they are too large to fit into any of my five display cases.
