Just picked this up at a flee market for 5 smackers! It looks pretty old and has already been started. I plan on restoring this to something better then original. Now time to dig in and dismantle!

Looks better than the one I scored at a flea market (in a box with 13 other models of similar vintage). Of course mine is more than 50 years old--seems to be built from an original issue. B)

I remember this kit and built a few back when they were new. This looks like who ever had it had almost of not totally finished this model. I personally always liked the decals for the fender treatment. Looks like to could easily be put back together.

Currently its a total glue bomb. I think it may be a little easyer to put back together then I originally thought, seems like time has taken a toll on the glue.

Lol did you age it? Or just bad glue?

The old "tube glue" was really bad when it got older. Besides turning yellow/brown color it would often damage the mounting surfaces. Looking at the pictures I wonder if some carful sanding with a very fine grit paper could restore the mounting surfaces to the point that you could reassemble this again.

I didn't do a thing to it except find all the parts in the big box and set them together. It's the styrene equivalent of a "barn find."

Really? Huh, guess nobody ever made a rat rod one of these eh?

Got it apart today. Hopefully this glue residue sands off. Anybody got any suggestions on what grit is best to be used on a old model like this?

Depends on your definition of "pretty old". This is not the early 60's double kit tooling of the Ala Kart(recently reissued as the Mod Rod), but the early 2000's all new tooling Ala Kart. So, you're looking at a kit that was designed, manufactured and built within the last 15 years or so. Some parts of the kit are really nice(wheels and tires), and others are a downgrade when compared to the old tooling (underscale engine, some body components and contours)

However, don't let that stop you from rebuilding it. It's just plastic. Have fun with it.

Thanks! Hearing that this isn't exactly a " rare" model puts confidence back in me, considering I'm about to chop the roof. And here I thought that I was about to cut up something valuable... Lol!

Hello everyone. Sorry that its been a while, but due to many renovations in my house I was forced to box up all the current project cars I have on the bench. I have now started to re-clean my workshop and look forwards to starting a new model car... soon.

Very cool! The Ala Kart has always been my favorite hot rod. I built one of the original kits back in the day, but gave it to my nephews after I graduated High School, so it is long lost/destroyed. What a dumb thing to do!

I do have the Danbury Mint diecast version which is really awesome (see photo). I also have a couple of the reissues that I hope to get to someday.

Digging through some of my collection the other day and I discovered I have two reissue kits and an old glue bomb kit that I acquired somewhere along the line. Now I need to do something with one of them! B)

WOW! That kit looks astounding! mine is still currently a glue bomb though... but hopefully not for long!

If you are referring to the photo I posted, I did not build it. That is the Danbury Mint diecast. It is beautiful though.

I have two unbuilt reissues and one old glue bomb that I hope to do something with in the future.

ah I understand now... but don't lie, we both wish we built it. BTW any idea on how to easily remove old glue off this thing? I'm currently trying to use acetone, but its not as good as I was hoping.
