Gumball Posted October 28, 2018 Posted October 28, 2018 Just picked this up at a flee market for 5 smackers! It looks pretty old and has already been started. I plan on restoring this to something better then original. Now time to dig in and dismantle!
landman Posted October 28, 2018 Posted October 28, 2018 i remember building that almost 60 years ago, or maybe 55.
Snake45 Posted October 28, 2018 Posted October 28, 2018 Looks better than the one I scored at a flea market (in a box with 13 other models of similar vintage). Of course mine is more than 50 years old--seems to be built from an original issue.
espo Posted October 28, 2018 Posted October 28, 2018 I remember this kit and built a few back when they were new. This looks like who ever had it had almost of not totally finished this model. I personally always liked the decals for the fender treatment. Looks like to could easily be put back together.

Currently its a total glue bomb. I think it may be a little easyer to put back together then I originally thought, seems like time has taken a toll on the glue.

Besides turning yellow/brown color it would often damage the mounting surfaces. Looking at the pictures I wonder if some carful sanding with a very fine grit paper could restore the mounting surfaces to the point that you could reassemble this again.

Gumball Posted October 29, 2018 Author Posted October 29, 2018 Got it apart today. Hopefully this glue residue sands off. Anybody got any suggestions on what grit is best to be used on a old model like this?
Deathgoblin Posted October 29, 2018 Posted October 29, 2018 Looks like it's in pretty good shape. I've got one of these, but it's going to be part of a project.

Depends on your definition of "pretty old". This is not the early 60's double kit tooling of the Ala Kart(recently reissued as the Mod Rod), but the early 2000's all new tooling Ala Kart. So, you're looking at a kit that was designed, manufactured and built within the last 15 years or so. Some parts of the kit are really nice(wheels and tires), and others are a downgrade when compared to the old tooling (underscale engine, some body components and contours) However, don't let that stop you from rebuilding it. It's just plastic. Have fun with it. Edited November 15, 2018 by Mr. Metallic

And here I thought that I was about to cut up something valuable... Lol!
Gumball Posted January 29, 2019 Author Posted January 29, 2019 Hello everyone. Sorry that its been a while, but due to many renovations in my house I was forced to box up all the current project cars I have on the bench. I have now started to re-clean my workshop and look forwards to starting a new model car... soon.
Kruzn Posted January 29, 2019 Posted January 29, 2019 (edited) Very cool! The Ala Kart has always been my favorite hot rod. I built one of the original kits back in the day, but gave it to my nephews after I graduated High School, so it is long lost/destroyed. What a dumb thing to do! I do have the Danbury Mint diecast version which is really awesome (see photo). I also have a couple of the reissues that I hope to get to someday. Edited February 1, 2019 by Kruzn
Kruzn Posted February 1, 2019 Posted February 1, 2019 Digging through some of my collection the other day and I discovered I have two reissue kits and an old glue bomb kit that I acquired somewhere along the line. Now I need to do something with one of them!
Gumball Posted February 5, 2019 Author Posted February 5, 2019 WOW! That kit looks astounding! mine is still currently a glue bomb though... but hopefully not for long!

If you are referring to the photo I posted, I did not build it. That is the Danbury Mint diecast. It is beautiful though. I have two unbuilt reissues and one old glue bomb that I hope to do something with in the future.

BTW any idea on how to easily remove old glue off this thing? I'm currently trying to use acetone, but its not as good as I was hoping. Edited February 5, 2019 by Gumball
