vamach1 Posted December 21, 2018 Posted December 21, 2018 (edited) I recently bought the reissued AMT kit and got a Monogram one on Ebay. I thought they would be pretty similar but when I put them side by side it is interesting the difference in the lenght and size if the rear window. It makes me wonder how the same scale could be so different for something that should be pretty close despite the difference in brands. Edited December 21, 2018 by vamach1 Ok
Snake45 Posted December 21, 2018 Posted December 21, 2018 Interesting! Isn't the Monogram basically the old Aurora? I have the Mono reissues of the '65 GTO and Barracuda, but not the Mustang.
Phirewriter Posted December 21, 2018 Posted December 21, 2018 Yes the Monogram issue is the Aurora kit, along with the Barracuda and GTO. The Mako Shark was also released in that series shortly after Monogram acquired the old Aurora molds. It's probably a good possibility that Atlantis has those now.
64Comet404 Posted December 22, 2018 Posted December 22, 2018 I think a lot of the differences between the two kits came down to company philosophies. Aurora tended to be the first one out of the blocks with new kits, so product research was probably limited to magazine test pictures of the 2+2, and a look at whatever Mustang was in the vicinity of the factory. AMT was dealing with Ford for promotional models, so they would have access to design drawings and precise measurements for tooling.
unclescott58 Posted September 19, 2021 Posted September 19, 2021 Any more photos comparing the two kits?

All my kits are in storage after the move here and it will be a while until I figure out where to store them. Perhaps one of these has origins back to being also used for slot cars which could explain the width difference.
Snake45 Posted September 19, 2021 Posted September 19, 2021 I know the Monogram one was a slot car (K&B). Not sure about AMT.
Mark Posted September 19, 2021 Posted September 19, 2021 AMT did produce a few 1/32 scale slot cars. I know the Avanti was among them (reissue includes the separate lower front pan from the slot car). With the Mustang being so popular at that time, it's very likely it too was issued as a slot car.
Tabbysdaddy Posted September 19, 2021 Posted September 19, 2021 I have a Revell one, but it doesn't look like those.
