Pat Minarick Posted March 10, 2019 Posted March 10, 2019 Anyone ever try dull coating foil and appling it? Need to do a grill surround but didn't want to have to mask it and spray it.
StevenGuthmiller Posted March 10, 2019 Posted March 10, 2019 You can put dull coat over it after it is applied. I don't think you will have any luck doing it before hand. Dull coat it with a brush afterwards. Steve

If you over lap it at all the adhesive from the other piece will pull the dull core off. I think I will try it your way . Thanks
JollySipper Posted March 10, 2019 Posted March 10, 2019 Do you think you could go over the foil with a Scotch Brite pad to dull it on the sheet?

I used a similar technique for the stainless roof panels an my '60 Imperial. I just sanded it in one direction to give it the polished stainless look and then applied it as usual. Steve
espo Posted March 11, 2019 Posted March 11, 2019 Bare Metal Foil is also offered in a flat aluminum finish also. You might consider buying a sheet if you're doing many builds with this type of finish. You apply it just like the Chrome finish and it is very realistic looking.

Be careful and don't overdo any buffing. Excess buffing will make the foil shiny.

Too much burnishing will make it look like regular foil. I never really saw enough difference between the regular and aluminum BMF to justify buying 2 different sheets. It's pretty easy to transform the regular foil into whatever finish you desire. Steve

To my eyes, they have a different color. Regular BMF chrome has a warm silver color (like Nickel, or Stainless Steel) where aluminum foil is more bluish-silver. Quite noticeable when compared side by side.
BigTallDad Posted March 12, 2019 Posted March 12, 2019 (edited) As a work-around (to avoid making aluminum too shiny)... Get a short length of plumber's Teflon tape (6" or so). Hold one end of the tape, lay the rest over the area to be buffed, and buff in one direction only, away from the end being held. If necessary, flip the tape around so you can burnish in the other direction. Thin aluminum foil can be used in the same fashion. Teflon tape and aluminum foil are very thin, allowing you get into the nooks and crannies. You also avoid contact between the buffing tool and the foil. Edited March 12, 2019 by BigTallDad
Jon Cole Posted March 14, 2019 Posted March 14, 2019 I dullcoat BMF to get my own matte aluminum. I have also scuffed BMF for effect. For black BMF, just spray flat or semi-gloss right on the sheet. Works great.
