afx Posted April 17, 2019 Author Posted April 17, 2019 https://www.conceptcarz.com/z25185/mercury-comet-cyclone-bfx.aspx "The first batch of lightweight racing cars by Mercury was offered in 1964. They were race prepared from the get-go. Mercury produced around 11 A/FX cars in 1964, which went to famous race car drivers like Arnie Beswick, Eddie Shartman, and Dyno Don Nicholson among others. The B/FX Comets of 1965 were built off a 289 engine with 271 horsepower, and used four Webbers. Building up the 289, horsepower on these cars could approach 450. Since these cars weighed in at around 2,600 pounds, the performance was outstanding."
chris chabre Posted April 17, 2019 Posted April 17, 2019 as others have stated, you could get the dual quads, and the webers on the 289, and you are correct that it would be a B/FX class car. The previous year Comet were very similar in visuals for both A and B/fx classes so if you look at those youll have an idea on what mods were done. Only 2 A/FX falcons were built. All of this Im sure youre aware of haha
afx Posted April 18, 2019 Author Posted April 18, 2019 (edited) I sectioned approx. 3mm or 3" scale inches out of the floor pan ahead of the rear axle. I shaved the lip off the rear wheel wells and radiused them to fit the slicks, they will need a little more clearance. My camera angle isn't quite level the actual stance is just slightly nose down. Scott8950 Posted April 18, 2019 Posted April 18, 2019 looking good... this is very similar to what i have in mind for mine.

Any version of the Revell/Monogram '66 Shelby Mustang GT350 or GT350R as they share nearly all the same parts. Edited April 19, 2019 by afx

The chassis is just slightly too long. If you wanted to go with a pushed forward front wheel position and modify the front wheel opening accordingly you might not need to section the chassis.

And you're giving me an idea for how I want to build a chassis for that Paul Sable '65 Mustang I'm restoring. Since it didn't come with its original chassis, I have a bit of a free hand in creating one. I think I'll build up a Weber-carbed B/FX 289 something like yours, using all correct period parts. Drive on!
afx Posted April 21, 2019 Author Posted April 21, 2019 Decided to go with a dual quad setup in lieu of the Webers. Not aware of 2-4V setup for a SBF in scale so I modified the unit from the Revell 427 Cobra SC.

afx Posted April 22, 2019 Author Posted April 22, 2019 (edited) Stripped the valve covers and painted them along with the intake manifold Tamiya TS-30 Silver Leaf, my new favorite silver. Edited April 23, 2019 by afx
Hmann68 Posted April 23, 2019 Posted April 23, 2019 Nice work so far, and the Tamiya silver leaf looks great, will have to get some for my paint stash.
Scott8950 Posted April 23, 2019 Posted April 23, 2019 its looking good... the silver leaf actually looks dead on for the aluminum valve cover. the stance of the car is perfect!!!!
