I like the music from the band TOOL... something I've noticed about it, tho, is that it doesn't get stuck in your head like other music. I think that it's because it's not based on easy hooks and standard time signatures like most music is. Their best album by far is Lateralus. It's a more "hopeful" album than their other albums....

I don't think there are any bands out there now that will have any staying power in the future. Groups like Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin are timeless classics.... but what bands now will be as influential as they were in about 30-40 years?

Fellow Tool fan here, I think part of the reason there aren't huge bands like Zeppelin anymore is that our media is so segmented. There are huge acts I've never heard of in genres I don't listen to because you can pretty much surround yourself with just stuff you like 24 hours a day. We live in our own little perpetual media bubbles and you almost have to purposefully seek out different stuff to hear. And it's not just music either. I don't know that any band from the last 15 years or so will still be relevant when we're old, it seems like the 90s will be the last decade to produce long lasting music.

I don't want to hijack your thread TJ but to Brian's point, the reason I started my thread  "Favorite Obscure or Discovered Album" was in the hope that I could broaden my musical listening horizons.  Let forum members turn me onto bands/musicians they like and allow me to share some of the music I like.  It is easy to get in place where you only listen to genres your are familiar with and miss a lot of other great music out there.

JC, I've been introduced to a bunch of music thanks to your thread... if I knew how to post a video, there's a lot of music I would post, as I'm always finding new music on Napster (LOVE that site!). For instance, I just recently started listening to a band called Can.... they have one song in particular called Vitamin C that's pretty catchy.

Totally agree!

When viewing a video on Youtube, just copy the URL in the address bar "https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=YmN9oHa3ZIQ" ( I intentionally left a space between the forward stroke and the word "watch" so you can see what I mean. When you copy and paste the URL, the space won't be there) and paste it into the comment box here. What you get is this:

It's so simple, even I can do it. :D

My bother-in-law has been trying to get me to listen to these guys for years. So I listened to Lateralus last week. Clearly they are talented, but without the aforementioned hooks and tendency for repetition, it just didn't grab me.

It's cool that you gave them a listen, man...... I'll admit that they're not for everybody. I've owned all of their studio stuff at one point, but never bought any of their merchandise. Just couldn't see myself going around with "tool" printed across my chest......

Maybe back up an album, Aenima is a bit more radio friendly. Tracks like Stinkfist, 46 & 2, and Aenema get regular radio play and are a bit more hooky.

I'm a big fan of Tool, have been since I first heard Undertow when it first came out. I have to say though, I have not been as big a fan of their last couple of albums. In fact, Aenima is the last album of theirs that I truly enjoyed all the way through.

Those early albums had riffs and hooks and melodies that stick with me. 10,000 Days, Lateralus, Fear Innoculum...great albums, but no earworms anywhere to be found.

Still, amazing band. And if you ever get the chance to see them live, DO IT.

Their music style got more "progressive" as they matured as a band.... if you listen to a song, maybe "Sweat"... then listen to "Right in Two" off of 10,000 Days, they're worlds apart.

How about Les Claypool? Any fans? I know my friend JC listens to him, how about everyone else? The guy's got more projects going on than anyone that I know of... He's just released some stuff with Sean Lennon under the band name The Claypool Lennon Delirium....... Pretty trippy, heady stuff!

A great Les Claypool side project: Frog Brigade playing Pink Floyd-Animals live.

I'm drawn to a wide array of music..... I first was introduced to The Cardigans by the video to "My Favorite Game". Good song, cool video.... Here's them doing "Carnival"

Have any of you guys heard the album titled 'Encomium'? It's a tribute to Led Zeppelin...

The album art looks like this...

The only song that I've heard from it is "Dancing Days" by STP. I'm sure I can find all the songs on youtube, I was just wondering if you guys had heard it....

Here's a link to wikipedia...

They have a better song called "Thrill Seeker"....

Thanks. I like those. Lotsa surf music / rockabilly influence. Good tire-smoking stuff.

Yep, I've owned that album for probably 25 years. Overall it's pretty good if you like 90s bands.
