Harry P. Posted October 1, 2008 Posted October 1, 2008 As a die-hard White Sox fan, all I can say is... WOO HOO!!!! Sox just beat the Twins 1-0 to win the AL Central. Wow, both the Sox and the Cubs are in the playoffs! First time that's happened in over 100 years!
Joe Handley Posted October 2, 2008 Posted October 2, 2008 (edited) Should be interesting to see what happens if the Sox go all the way and the Cub don't choke............................again If that isn't enough of a sign as to which team I prefer.......read the first lines of my sig Edited October 2, 2008 by Joe Handley
lordairgtar Posted October 2, 2008 Posted October 2, 2008 Yankees win in double over time! 21-17 You've been off the mainland for so long you forgot baseball terminology...it's called extra innings! Double overtime, what a riot
Harry P. Posted October 2, 2008 Author Posted October 2, 2008 Tampa just beat the Sox 6-4 in the first playoff game... Stupid Tampa...
locoengr Posted October 3, 2008 Posted October 3, 2008 The way Minnesota and the Sox played the last 2-3 weeks neither deserved to be in the playoffs. It was a given which either team backed in is going to get swept. And I consider myself a Twins fan. However, it is neat about the Chicago teams. A series between the two would be great. What's nicest is the Yankees are not in it. The team that has wrecked baseball, IMHO, by constantly trying to buy a penant instead of building a team through the farm club. The next saddest thing is other teams are doing the same now. The future is here and now and hardly any team wants to wait. They all want it now. Oh well.... Go Phillies as they have our home town boy on the roster, the 33 y.o. rookie Chris Coste. And good luck to all the teams!!
CarModDave Posted October 3, 2008 Posted October 3, 2008 (edited) Tampa just beat the Sox 6-4 in the first playoff game... Stupid Tampa... Sorry about your Sox Harry, I was at the game today (the Rays actually play in St. Petersburg - part of the "Tampa Bay Area", not in Tampa ) and your ChiSox looked a bit tired after that emotional 163rd game win the other night. Plus their W-L record on artificial turf is horrible. I've got tix for the 2nd game tomorrow, too! People thought this team would fade throughout the season but I've been to almost 20 games this year and I can tell you, these Rays are for real. Also, just for fun, check out this site. They have correctly predicted the NCAA tournament champion (before the tournament), the Stanley Cup champion (before the playoffs) and the Celtics over the Lakers (in six). They are picking the Rays to wind up the season by beating the Cubs in the World Series in 7 games: http://whatifsports.com/beyondtheboxscore/...008MLB_Playoffs What's nicest is the Yankees are not in it. The future is here and now and hardly any team wants to wait. They all want it now. Oh well.... The Rays are doing it through the farm system and trades for some "lower tier" players/veterans. The ENTIRE payroll for the Rays this year was $43 million! The Yankees and BoSox EACH have payrolls over $200 million. This Tampa Bay team is built for the future. There are so many young draft choices they've been able to get over the years for finishing last every year! I think you'll be seeing the Rays in post season play for quite awhile............. So why aren't they called the "St. Pete Rays" then? Yeah, the Sox weren't at their best today. And AJ getting caught stealing didn't help things. But wait until the teams come up to US Cellular.... things will be a bit different then! Vazquez has been pretty mediocre lately, so I'm not surprised that the Rays scored some runs. We'll see what happens when the teams play here! And BTW.... congrats to the Rays for one of the most dramatic turnarounds from one season to the next in baseball history. I love the fact that they beat the BoSox and the Yankeees. Just goes to show that money can't always buy you success! Edited October 3, 2008 by harrypri
Jantrix Posted October 3, 2008 Posted October 3, 2008 Although I'm a native Tampan (no laughing now!), I'd really like to see the Cubbies go the distance. My last station while in the service was in St. Louis and involved a lot of travel throughout the midwest. Chicago was regular stop for us. My good buddy was a native and lifelong Cubs fan so I saw a lot of Wrigley field. I really grew to love the Cubs fans there. The nicest people, rain or shine, win or crushing loss. So for the sake of those most excellent folks...... Go Cubbies!
Cornpatch Posted October 3, 2008 Posted October 3, 2008 Harry As an ex Chicagoian and probley Iowa's biggest White Sox fan. I have to agree with Locoenger, the White Sox are not playing nor do they look like a championship team. In fact neither Chicago team is. For the Sox to take the ALDS they will have to win one in Tampa, no way around it. Waiting for them to get back to U.S. Cellular is fruitless. Even if they win 2 at the Cell, the fifth game if needed is still going to be played in Tampa. So no matter what, they are in a must win situation today or Sunday. I for one hope they can do it, I also hope the Cubs can win the next three from the Dodgers. But realistily the lights are getting dim for both teams. If the Sox do pull this out, I'll see you at the World Series, and you can buy the beer and peanuts. Jeff
Harry P. Posted October 3, 2008 Author Posted October 3, 2008 Go Cubbies! Let's see: 8 straight playoff game losses and counting...

I figured the Rays would win at least one of the games at their place... after all they had 97 wins this season! But the Sox can really pound the ball, they led all of baseball in home runs... and they really pour it on when they play at home. I saw a game earlier this season when they went back-to-back-to-back-to-back in one inning! Even if the Sox lose the second game today, I still think they can come back home and take two. Then back to Florida and we'll see what happens...

Then back to Florida and we'll see what happens... Don't forget, Harry. Not only did the Rays win what is generally considered THE toughest division in all of MLB - the AL East - but they did it by also having the best home record in the majors. And it's a given that the ChiSox can hit the long ball. But they have a real hard time manufacturing runs any other way, as proven in game 1. Their 4 runs all came with two swings, the 3 run shot then the 9th inning solo homer. They had the chance with the bases loaded but............nada. Anyway, here's some facts about the Rays playing at the Trop: MAJORS' BEST AT HOME--- The Rays finished with the majors best home record at 57-24 (.704) ...the last team with more home wins in one season was the 1998 New York Yankees (62-19) ...the Rays are just the 7th team since 1980 to play .700 ball at home ...the Rays won 53 of their last 69 games at home ...overall, the Rays lost only 5 series at home all season (20-5-1) in 26 series and lost only 2 of their last 22 home series (19-2-1) beginning April 22 with a 3-game sweep of Toronto at the Disney Wide World of Sports... SERIES PLAY---The Rays won 34 series and swept 10 including 4 against postseason teams: Boston twice, Los Angeles-AL, and Chicago-NL...the Rays lost only 5 of their last 44 series. Tropicana Field is a funky staduim, but it epitomizes a true home field advantge. The Rays should take game 2. The ChiSox may get 1 win at home but there's just no way TB loses this series. I'm headed out the door in about 30, headed for ST. PETERSBURG (NOT Tampa! ) to take in game 2 at Tropicana Field. Look for me straight up from 1st base, Section 214, about 15 rows behind the Rays dugout - IF it was actually possible to spot someone among the rest of the lunatics......... All in fun and just having a good time! GO RAYS! Edited October 3, 2008 by CarModDave
CarModDave Posted October 3, 2008 Posted October 3, 2008 Don't forget your cowbell!!! Dude.....I hate those things! The guys wives love 'em, so we endure. But I'll tell you what, that place gets LOUD!!! Out the door I go!............................
CarModDave Posted October 4, 2008 Posted October 4, 2008 Wow. What a great game - at least for RAYS fans. Harry, I thought your ChiSox were going to make a game of it for awhile there..........And they almost got a helping hand from the 1st base ump when they called Dye safe, even though Aybar had put the tag on him. The play was right down in front of us and even from where we were sitting you could clearly see that tag. But, in the end, it ended as it should......with the Rays pulling out the 6-2 victory. Even 2nd baseman Akonori Iwamura, who only hit 6 home runs all year - got off what ended up as the game-winning homer! With both the ChiSox AND Cubbies down 2-0, it doesn't look good once again for the Chicago MLB teams............ I have a feeling the Rays will be celebrating as soon as Sunday at U.S. Cellular Field...................
Harry P. Posted October 4, 2008 Author Posted October 4, 2008 I have a feeling the Rays will be celebrating as soon as Sunday at U.S. Cellular Field................... Jeez, how do you leave like 45 men on base????!!! The Sox didn't deserve to win that game. Oh well... see ya in Chicago tomorrow, boys. The Sox aren't exactly in the best position, but we'll see what they can do tomorrow. Danks is pitching, he's the one who 2-hit the Twins to win the A.L. Central the other day, so I'm cautiously optimistic...
CarModDave Posted October 5, 2008 Posted October 5, 2008 Jeez, how do you leave like 45 men on base????!!! The Sox didn't deserve to win that game. It was more like 53. I was counting!
Joe Handley Posted October 5, 2008 Posted October 5, 2008 Let's see: 8 straight playoff game losses and counting... That's right Harry, if they blow it....again.... there's always next year.........again You seen those stupid white signs with a W on them? Somebody needs to make one is silver with an old English S in black on it
Harry P. Posted October 6, 2008 Author Posted October 6, 2008 Ok, now we have a series! Go Sox!!! One more win and we can go back to Florida and settle this once and for all...
CarModDave Posted October 6, 2008 Posted October 6, 2008 The ChiSox definitely had it going on today. Gotta tip my hat to 'em for getting the win. Played a really good, all-around game today. But that's it. The Rays need to show 'em WHY they were the AL East Champs and slam the door during game 4 tomorrow. But IF there's a game 5, there is NO WAY the Rays lose at the Trop! No way. We'll see what happens on Monday.................
Harry P. Posted October 6, 2008 Author Posted October 6, 2008 Yeah, that stadium down there is a piece of work. The "catwalks", the wires dangling from the ceiling, the cowbells, the fake grass... no wonder the Rays won like 200 home games. For the visiting team it's like going into the Metrodome... I mean Twilight Zone! But seriously... good series so far. The Sox definitely have their hands full with the Rays. Let's see what happens next. I'll definitely be watching!
gasman Posted October 6, 2008 Posted October 6, 2008 its been since 1992 since my favorite teams the Pirates have even finished the season above .500 so I don't pay much attention to post season baseball anymore. Its a good think the Steelers and the Pens are playing right now. it helps up forget about the Pirates.
