Misha Posted February 28, 2020 Posted February 28, 2020 Just finished the old Monogram Scarab kit based on their slot car offering from the early 60s. The model depicts the single version built by Reventlow Automobiles Inc. (RAI) for Lance Reventlow’s use. It was later modified with a SBC equipped with four side draft Webers on a x-ram manifold (similar to the GS Vettes). At that time it became AJ Foyt’s ride to victory at the 1963 Nassau Trophy race. So here is my question... at this point I really like the look of the Scarab as it sits without decals, as it allows me to take in the great lines and proportions... on the other hand, it would be great to have the Mecom/AJ ride with numbers and sponsorships, even if takes away the eye from the overall look somewhat. I am only missing the round Wynn’s decal and the CanAm Race Series insignia. What would you choose? Why? Thanx Misha
Snake45 Posted February 28, 2020 Posted February 28, 2020 Leave it that way for a while. If you ever get tired of looking at it like that, you can always apply the decals for a new look. I'm planning to build mine straight from the box, polishing the beautiful metallic blue plastic, swirls and all.
afx Posted February 28, 2020 Posted February 28, 2020 It looks incomplete to me therefore I would apply the decals. However it could be at it's first race and the sponsor decals and number haven't yet been applied.
stavanzer Posted February 28, 2020 Posted February 28, 2020 I agree with Snake. Leave it as is, until you get tired of looking at it. Then put some decals on it. IMHO, I'd finish it with just the Race Numbers, and call it done.
Bainford Posted February 28, 2020 Posted February 28, 2020 I appreciate the quandary. I frequently leave decals off so to enjoy the natural lines of the car. Yet I love the look of well done full livery. Count me, on the fence. Gorgeous Scarab, by the way.
Gramps46 Posted February 28, 2020 Posted February 28, 2020 First you did a really great job with the build. I am leaning towards the leave it as is for a while and enjoy the pure look and then you can always come back and add the decals. Another kind of quirky option is only do the decals on one side.
espo Posted February 28, 2020 Posted February 28, 2020 I can only echo everyone else about leaving it as is, but that's my choice and it sounds like your trying to bring your self to go a little further. With that in mind consider the sponsor decals that are period correct. Leave the numbers off. I would try and find some sort of white tape that is easily removable and cut to the same size as the area where the numbers would be mounted. You could use some dry transfer numbers depending on which car your showing. With the dry transfer numbers on the white background tape you can change them at will.
Misha Posted February 28, 2020 Author Posted February 28, 2020 (edited) Thanks for all the feedback, really makes the forum work well with the exchange of ideas. With that in mind, I will be leaving it as it is, the white stripe and blended roundels provide the right accent for the racing body. Very happy with the build, next stop will be Under Glass. Thanks again, Misha Edited February 28, 2020 by Misha Grammar
