Mike Young Posted May 23, 2020 Posted May 23, 2020 All my kits are fair game, but maybe 5% were specifically bought just for parts. Sometimes, just for one single part. Back in '88, I went to a Goodguy's car show in Pleasanton, Ca. and took a couple models to put in the MC exhibit. One was a '70 Challenger and upon taking it out of the box, one of the side mirrors was gone. I HAD to fix it, so a quick trip to a local hobby shop netted a '71 Satellite with some mirrors close to what was needed. I still have that stupid '71 Satellite sitting in the box, minus the mirrors, more than likely never to be built. But who knows, one day........I might need the wheels.
Bill Anderson Posted May 24, 2020 Posted May 24, 2020 Not often, but yes I have. The most recent was for an auction of the 3 in 1 AMT 1957 Ford kit. Cost me $80 on Ebay and sourced the steel wheels, baby moons, and spotlights for the '57 Ford Fairlane Convertible I'm building using a different kit as the main source. The $80 was a lot to spend just for the parts I needed, but I figure I'll resell it and substitute mag wheels and other parts and should recover som of the cost. Now if only I could get a convertible top or tonneau cover.............
Snake45 Posted May 24, 2020 Posted May 24, 2020 I just bought an original annual AMT '66 T-bird off eBay just because it included ONE part I need that's not in any of the reissues.
SCRWDRVR Posted May 24, 2020 Posted May 24, 2020 I have never bought a kit with the soul purpose of using it for parts, I recently (for the first time) bought a kit to get certain parts from it but still plan to build the kit just not with the custom parts I wanted from it....
Tom Geiger Posted May 24, 2020 Posted May 24, 2020 Everything I’ve built recently started with parts kits.. 1950 Chevy pickup- I had a couple of $5 started kits. Built one nice truck, still have a ton of parts. Currently building a pair of early Jeepsters from the remains of 3 kits.
maxwell48098 Posted May 25, 2020 Posted May 25, 2020 I'll buy cheap, bagged kits at toy shows for under $5 just for some parts. I've then built "parts box" vehicles with the leftovers. A.J.
Brutalform Posted May 26, 2020 Posted May 26, 2020 (edited) I’ve bought many 60 Ford Starliners, and 64 Dodge S/S kits, just to rob the chassis from them. Edited May 26, 2020 by Brutalform

espo Posted May 27, 2020 Posted May 27, 2020 I have bought several kits that I have absolutely no interest in but had a set of wheels and tires or suspension parts I did want. I usually cruise the clearance Isles looking for what ever is on clearance.
