ChrisBcritter Posted May 17, 2020 Posted May 17, 2020 The CA DMV has issued new black ones, listed as "1960 LEGACY". They were going to offer yellow plates but didn't get enough pre-orders for them.

The cost doesn't look like any more than what I was paying for my personalized plates years ago.

Ooops, yer right. I just remembered that as I have a 54 pathfinder model project in the works and scratched built the six.

You also mention the California license plates. I'm not sure of the time frame of when you were a resident there but you mention the blue plates with the yellow numbers. My personal residency was from '53 to '57 and '62 till '96. You are correct about the plates staying with the vehicle as it changed owners, the interesting part there is that the new owner didn't have to pay renewal fees or Property Taxes as it is called in many other states until they were due again. One of the main reasons for the blue plates was based on the number of cars and trucks on the road. The old three letter and three number system was reaching its limit. In the past when the color changed the old plates were removed and you would get a new number for your car with the new color scheme. When they started issuing the blue plates it was with the idea that they would start the numbering all over again but with the intent to start using 7 digits as the number of vehicles increased and save the cost of a complete plate change. When they went to the white plates with the sunrise on the top and red California lettering they just kept issuing new numbers and the old blue plates stayed in circulation. Some time in the '80's they dropped the sunrise and started just plan red California across the top, much like some US Government license plate. Then they started the theme plates with palm trees and whales and such. I had already left by the time they started letting people reregister old yellow or black license plates with a little tag mounted on the top. I understand that at one time they were even going to issue new black or yellow plates for older collector type vehicles, I'm sure at a premium price. I lived there in 1976 to 1884, spending time in Santa Barbara, Santa Maria and San Luis Obispo. I seem to remember blue plates with six characters too. I know they went from numerals first to letters first or visa versa, memory shady in my old age. I live in Wisconsin now and renewal costs 100 bux or more depending on the plate

I went to Toyota of Santa Maria after the owner of Home Motors bought that store. In '83 I went to the Monterey Auto Plaza in Monterey. I sure miss the great food and all the other fun things to do in that area.

I remember buying model cars at a dept. store downtown SLO and a LHS in Goleta.

The model shop you mentioned, was that next to Bubble Gum Ally across from the Creamery restaurant ? They were pricy as I recall and only bought one model from them. I wasn't building much at that time with long hours at work and other social activities going on in my personal life at the time. Always nice to hear from someone who experienced that area, lot of great times.

I remember when my work/home got set afire, the owner of that LHS gave me a couple model cars, some paints and glue and a Scale Auto which was the first time I heard of that mag. When I moved back to Milwaukee, I stopped in and visited with Gary Schmidt and he gave me a bunch of mags from issue 1 to the then current issue.

You're not on your own, if the American version had featured on the programme, I probably wouldn't have asked about it.
