I think cobraman's  suggestion would be the closest to what you're looking for. Looking thru my spray cans from both Tamiya and Testors the only other one I could find that might be close is Testors #1628 Competition Orange in enamel.

Ray's suggestion looks very close.

Testors Italian Red is too red, and Competition Orange is too orange.

Chevy Engine Red is WAY too intense/vibrant for the car in the photo.

Agree with you that Competition Orange is too orange.

I'm wondering if the car isn't original '57 Chevy Matador Red, which has an orange cast in it to my eye. If so, MCW paints would be the way to go.

In 1986 mustangs could be ordered in jalapeño red which was an orangish red color. You may be able to find that in a duplicolor can or order it in a can from Napa or automotivetouchup.com

The hue of the Chevy engine red looks very close to me, although I will agree that straight from the can it would be intense.

But the '57 Nomad pictured has some patina that might tone it down.

I agree completely with the Matador Red option.

That is probably the color that is supposed to be represented on that car.

Another good option might be 1957 Chrysler "Gauguin Red" which is also a orange-red color.

They are both very attractive colors in my opinion, but unfortunately, for the OP's purposes, these colors are available from MCW or Scale Finishes in air brush form, but not readily available in a rattle can.

You can obtain these colors in a spray can from one of the custom mix paint providers, but it's going to cost you $25.00 to put it in a spray can.

Maybe, but it still looks a little too "red" to me.

There were two reds that year. A good friend of mine had one in jalapeño red and it’s definitely got an orange hue to it. In that pic I agree it looks more red but possibly that is the other red.

Very well could be.

The "Jalapena Red" on the chip chart doesn't appear to have any orange in it at all, but the example of the color provided by "paintref.com" is definitely orange.

Almost too orange to even be called red. :P

I think you hit it, because the paint looks warn and faded.

Pontiac Carousel Red maybe another option ?  It seems o be orangeish to me.

Pontiac Carousel Red is exactly the same as Chevy Hugger Orange. It's a very bright orange, though very slightly redder than Testor Competition Orange. IMHO too orange for this use.

Looks like my '91 in the background...

That’d be funny if it is, I just pulled this pic off the interweb. I had a 91 5.0 lx hatch. Miss that car terribly

This is Performance Red. Don't know if it's readily available in cans.

I had a 2000 GT in this color. Definitely had an orange tint.

I personally would go with Ray's suggestion, (cobraman).

Or I should say that I would order a jar of Matador Red from Scale Finishes, but if I had to use a rattle can, the Chevrolet engine red would be a good choice.

It looks to be very close, plus you would have plenty left to paint a boat load of Chevy engines. ;)

I bought a can to test

Let me know if it works for you. If it doesn't, it gives you a good excuse to buy and build some kind of Ferrari model. B)
