doorsovdoon Posted August 25, 2020 Posted August 25, 2020 Another project on the table, the '57 Bel Air by AMT. There's probably a million of these on the forum! This is the older release with solid axles and very low parts count, which I actually prefer, so this build isn't going to take too long. Nothing special in regards to paint on this one, just basic flame red with a white roof.
doorsovdoon Posted August 25, 2020 Author Posted August 25, 2020 Had some paint reaction on the hood but nothing too bad. Not sure why, I think I went a bit too heavy on the first coat.

I tink its just in season, Both my last two kits paint reacted, one not so bad, the other was extremely bad resulting in me discarding the hood and using a spare.
doorsovdoon Posted August 25, 2020 Author Posted August 25, 2020 I don't know why it happens. It's the same primer, same brand of paints but sometimes it just happens, it's weird. I should have taken a picture of it before I sanded the hood, it looked like microscopic dimpled vinyl. Would have looked good on the seats! Lol
GeeBee Posted August 25, 2020 Posted August 25, 2020 looking good, I'll be following this build, hopefully I'll get back to mine one day....
Modlbldr Posted August 25, 2020 Posted August 25, 2020 Can't go wrong with a red and white 57 Chevy. Looking good. Later-
espo Posted August 25, 2020 Posted August 25, 2020 While being simplified and some inaccuracies this is still a favorite kit to many including myself. Are you going to use the W Block engine or the small block ?
TransAmMike Posted August 25, 2020 Posted August 25, 2020 Any and all 57' BelAirs are great looking cars. Working on straight axle gasser right now.

I look forward to your updates on the '57, the reason I got this is from watching your build! This one is the early, less detailed version cos I couldn't find any of the newer releases here in the UK.

It is a nice kit, no issues so far apart from the hood needed a little shaving on the sides as they were rubbing on the wings, paint thickness would definitely give fit issues if I left it. The kit only comes with one engine, though I have heard this kit originally came with a ton of extra stuff back when it was released in 1962.

You have the recent release, that omitted all the extras this kit is normally loaded with. The blue plastic is the give-away, would have had a blue car on the box as well. I accidentally got one myself; I say accidentally because if I had known Round 2 was omitting ALL the extras, I would have passed it by. Literally any other boxing of the kit has the extras!

Even as a de-contented kit this is still a nice one to build. I wasn't even aware of Round 2 leaving out any of the extras until bisc63 mentioned it.
doorsovdoon Posted August 26, 2020 Author Posted August 26, 2020 On the tree there are some parts I think that were from the original AMT kit. They don't go anywhere on this build from what I can see. There are two tiny clear lenses, a set of gauges and what looks like an oil can? I have no idea what the other piece next to it is.
doorsovdoon Posted August 26, 2020 Author Posted August 26, 2020 After telling myself a thousand times that the door cards are silver top and bottom with red in the centre I go ahead and invert the colours! ? aaagh!!
doorsovdoon Posted August 26, 2020 Author Posted August 26, 2020 It'll have to do, lol. I'm not taking it apart now after detailing and glue!
doorsovdoon Posted August 26, 2020 Author Posted August 26, 2020 I did the whitewalls by placing a washer of the right size over the tyre, masked around it and just sprayed aerosol down there.
espo Posted August 26, 2020 Posted August 26, 2020 The gauge pod with the 5 gauges was for mounting on the bottom edge of the dash board. This was a common practice on 1:1 cars . The factory gauges were for the fuel and water temp only. The '57 Chevy had small parking/turn signal lights on the ends of the grill bar. These maybe lenses for that.
doorsovdoon Posted August 26, 2020 Author Posted August 26, 2020 Ah, ok. I'll stick those in then! I did think the lenses were for the grill bar, but the turn signals are convex to be painted amber. The lenses are much smaller and don't fit.
TransAmMike Posted August 27, 2020 Posted August 27, 2020 Hi Gareth, I would also like to build a 57 Wagon Gasser but I don't know of any 57 Chevy Wagon kit other than the old Nomad.
