Exotics_Builder Posted December 2, 2020 Posted December 2, 2020 I was invited to join a Pontiac Build on FB, due at year end. I put the 69 Camaro Pace Car temporarily on the shelf to go at this. I elected to do the Royal 66 GeeTO Tiger. The kit I have, is the Wangers version, which has several inaccuracies. I wound up getting an original kit to build the 1966 version. Later, I will attempt to recreate the Wangers version (too much work in the available time). I have gotten the chassis and interior basic painted, using Tamiya Matte Black and Semi-Gloss Black. Additionally, I used Testor’s Steel for the gas tank and exhaust system. One thing I discovered is the passenger side muffler is smaller than the driver side. I investigated another kit and it is the same. Is this prototypical? First time I recollect having come across that. I have prepped and primered the body. Yes, the body is in primer, Tamiya Fine White. After thinking long and hard, I decided on doing the white paneled version versus the black. Will start painting the body and detailing the engine and interior. Hope to be done by year end.
59 Impala Posted December 2, 2020 Posted December 2, 2020 Nice start Gary. I'm working on both cars in between two other builds. I have both car bodies painted and need to do the rest of the work on them.
BDSchindler Posted December 2, 2020 Posted December 2, 2020 (edited) I'm not up on just how many of the GTO's that were drag raced by Royal Pontiac back in the day but I had to opportunity to meet and interview Milt Schornack a few years back at a presentation ICONS Inc. was making ain front of Walt Hollifield's amazing GTO Car Collection In NC. TransAmMike Posted December 3, 2020 Posted December 3, 2020 Such cool looking GTO's back in the day. Someone else on the forum is also building one, actually two if I recall. Gotta put mine on the "production line".
Exotics_Builder Posted December 21, 2020 Author Posted December 21, 2020 Update on the 66 GeeTO. Got the engine mostly detailed. Don't think I'll go much further. Also got the first clear coat on for the decals.
Exotics_Builder Posted January 16, 2021 Author Posted January 16, 2021 Tweaking some of the details while getting up the courage to do the body decals. A couple of people told me their red stripes came apart when trying to apply. I did make a hi-res scan of the decal sheet (have been doing that lately for all started builds) and could mask and paint if they fail. But, I would hate to go through the pain.
slusher Posted January 16, 2021 Posted January 16, 2021 Gerry great looking engine! really nice progress... I like your project and will follow along..
doorsovdoon Posted January 16, 2021 Posted January 16, 2021 Dashboard is looking great, very nice detail.
TransAmMike Posted January 16, 2021 Posted January 16, 2021 Looking great so far Gerry, that real car in the picture (restored probably nicer than it's as raced livery) is georgeous.
Exotics_Builder Posted January 25, 2021 Author Posted January 25, 2021 Well, I think I've got the chassis and interior as far as I can go at the moment. So, it is on to tackle the decals and other body work.
Exotics_Builder Posted February 24, 2021 Author Posted February 24, 2021 Got the decals on, and they were a pain. Even with a strong coat of Microscale Decal Film, the long red accent lines came apart. Fortunately I have some Red Chatpak tape that is very close to the size of the stripes and quite thin. So, the tape "volunteered" to take the place of the decal stripes. There also was a "hickey" on the red part of one of the Hurst Logos. I did do a Hi-res scan of the decal sheet and could try to print off just the logo, but not yet sure if worth it. I have washed the model and getting ready to clear coat it. The decals really need a clear coat to better blend in.
TransAmMike Posted February 25, 2021 Posted February 25, 2021 Looks great Gerry, any and all '66 GTO's make me smile. Best of all GTO's IMO.?
