doorsovdoon Posted December 24, 2020 Posted December 24, 2020 It's Christmas day tomorrow and the new year is around the corner but I may be able to squeeze one more in before the year is out. This is the '66 Buick Wildcat by AMT, it's an old mould with solid axles, low parts count and one piece underside, for the age of the kit it looks very good. Some basic test fitting of pieces seems to be all fine and there is no flash whatsoever. Lots and lots of extras in this kit! It can be built either stock, show, or custom. I might actually do custom with this one but the colours are most definitely going to be white body, black interior, with... burgundy red vinyl roof, ooh yes!
Rockford Posted December 24, 2020 Posted December 24, 2020 These old Promo kits really do capture the actual car, makes up forthe lack of detail. I see you've already made a good start on the chassis and the engine (425 nail head I assume?). Colour scheme sounds great. Looking forward to seeing your usual rapid progress...!
espo Posted December 25, 2020 Posted December 25, 2020 I'll be looking forward to seeing what all you do with this build.

Yeah, these old promo style kits are not everyone's favourite but I love them. The lack of detail feels like a challenge offered by the manufacturer, "Here, see what you can do with this" Challenge accepted! Lol

doorsovdoon Posted December 26, 2020 Author Posted December 26, 2020 (edited) Getting some detailing done on the underside today. The basic underside has these sort of cutaway floor pans at the front corners and there's no real reason for them to be there as the kit kind of relies on the tub being the floor pan/firewall in that area. So I cut them out to where the crossmember runs and then painted the bottom of the interior tub and firewall to look like it merges with the floors. It's not great but I'm happy enough with it. I know, modifying the interior tub's firewall to be part of the floors, or even scratch building some floor pans to the firewall would look so much better, give me time, those builds will come, haha! I've made a start on the body, making the trim lines for the vinyl roof. My usual method, a few coats of high build primer between two strips of tape placed extremely close together. I'm trying this Tamiya tape made for tight curves, it's great, especially around the rear window panel as it curves to the C pillars, sticks nicely too. Edited December 27, 2020 by doorsovdoon
doorsovdoon Posted December 27, 2020 Author Posted December 27, 2020 Chassis rails are painted, exhaust and axle next. Got the vinyl roof done, it looks blood red! I'm hoping it's not going to be too overpowering when the car is all together. For some reason I thought there was no firewall in the kit (face palm!), anyway, it's made my life easier and will look so much better when I've blended the floors to it, I'm using regular car body filler.
doorsovdoon Posted December 28, 2020 Author Posted December 28, 2020 Roof is done, it's different but I really like how it looks against the white body. I've done some test fitting of the tub in the body and it fits fine, I just got some fine tuning to do and hopefully it'll look like one piece with the rest of the floor.
doorsovdoon Posted December 28, 2020 Author Posted December 28, 2020 The red roof and white body screams stock car racer, so that's what I'm going with. After sifting through a huge bag of wheels I'm stuck between the painted steels and the Cragars, I think they're Cragars so correct me if I'm wrong. Also trying to decide whether to use the Goodyear slicks on the back or regular like the front. I cut out the number from the decals that came with the AMT 'class of '57 Bel Air. What wheels take your fancy?
stitchdup Posted December 28, 2020 Posted December 28, 2020 I like your stock car idea. The steels probably fit the theme better than the spokes

bisc63 Posted December 29, 2020 Posted December 29, 2020 I think the chrome wheels add a splash of bling! White cars can look plain; but I get it for a stock car racer that the steel wheels would be "right", BUT, a vinyl top on a race car? Nope.

There's always a first, I guess... maybe some sponsor decals on the side promoting a vinyl roof upholsterer for American cars, haha. xD
doorsovdoon Posted January 6, 2021 Author Posted January 6, 2021 Getting some BMF done today. Underside is finished and engine fitted, just deciding now whether to use the stock wheels or still go with the red steels.
doorsovdoon Posted January 7, 2021 Author Posted January 7, 2021 Interior finished. Only small jobs left to do now, I should have this finished tonight.
TransAmMike Posted January 7, 2021 Posted January 7, 2021 Ususally I'm a chrome 5-spoke guy, but I gotta say those steelies in the last picture look darn good Gareth.
Rockford Posted January 7, 2021 Posted January 7, 2021 (edited) Like that interior mate, dash looks good. Looking forward to seeing this finished @ your usual rapid rate. These must have been wonderful cars to drive, like a flying living room! Edited January 7, 2021 by Rockford

Yes, I love the Cragars and Keystone type wheels too. I just finished this one and decided to go with the big fatties on the rear, I'll keep the whitewalls for something more stock. I'll post in under-glass soon.

Yeah, I've heard it's like floating on air driving some of these old land yachts, all they need is a coffee table and foot stool, haha.
doorsovdoon Posted January 8, 2021 Author Posted January 8, 2021 All done! I had some fun with this one, I'll post more pics in under-glass.
TransAmMike Posted January 8, 2021 Posted January 8, 2021 Well I actually didn't think it was going to be a "race" car. Looks cool tho!!

Yeah, I wasn't sure where to go with this one, so I just threw some decals on it and some fat meaties on the back and called it done.
c. jackson Posted January 14, 2021 Posted January 14, 2021 im also working on one of those. disappointed with the wrong 65 interior though.

Yeah, it's a convertible tub too. When I was researching trim colours I found better results when searching for the '65 and Riviera.
