e30lover Posted December 30, 2020 Posted December 30, 2020 Hi all, I managed to finish another kit for 2020 - Mk1 Golf GTI. It’s a fairly new kit from Revell Germany and has Fujimi EM rivaling details (full suspension, engine and interior details without absurd amount of fragile parts) I loved the way that engine compartment, underbody, interior and body all assembles together, as well as how window trims are molded to clear window parts. As the stock kit came with rather plain looking 13" steelies, I decided to make a "stanced” look with one of my period correct spare wheel set (Racing Hart’s turbofan style wheels)from Fujimi mk2 GTI kit, paired with stretched tires from Aoshima. They’re a bit too big and wide for my personal preferences, but I think it does a decent job reenacting the build that you would typically see at H2O/Waterfest/SEMA. For me, this is the first kit ever using airbrush setup which definitely took some time to get used to. The build details are: - Started with Tamiya grey surfacer then sanded with 2000 grit - To simulate real car's dark metallic blue, I laid 2 layers of Mr Color C328 blue with XC08 moonstone which gives very subtle pearl metallic effect (which you can mix or overcoat) - Laid another 2 layers of Tamiya X-22 clear with 3000 grit between every coat to minimize orange peel - Once it’s been dried, I used the usual Tamiya compounds to polish the body - Omitted rear badge and side stripe, as well as plastic fender flares - Body was masked off then side trim was painted with tamiya flat black - Grille was painted with tamiya red, then brush painted with tamiya acrylic flat black and silver - Added a few vacuum hoses, ignition and battery wires as well as fuel lines to simulate k-jetronics in the engine bay Hope y'all enjoy!
matthijsgrit Posted December 30, 2020 Posted December 30, 2020 Great job! The only clues this isn't a real car are the wheels and the reference objects in the pictures. You really nailed it and blended two kits together expertly!

I wish the wheels were slightly narrower and not staggered! Just couldn't justify ordering then having to wait 1+ month to receive aftermarket wheels..

There's a very subtle pearl flakes but it's nearly impossible to capture with the camera!

Thank you! Revell really did a great job on this kit. Not the simplest kit to build but It's probably my favourite experience of 2020!
iamsuperdan Posted January 13, 2021 Posted January 13, 2021 Although the stretch look on the tires is not my taste, I love the wheel choice. And the build overall is excellent. Engine detailing, paintwork...just excellent.

I'm on the hunt for smaller, narrower wheels that would be a worthy replacement!
