magicmustang Posted February 12, 2021 Posted February 12, 2021 (edited) Has anyone built a Piranha drag car using the Spy car coupe upper body half over the drag car lower half? Going to attempt this conversion. Was inspired by seeing Scott Colmer's Scorpion build. Edited February 12, 2021 by magicmustang
Snake45 Posted February 12, 2021 Posted February 12, 2021 Due to the way the coupe body is set up, this will probably be more involved/difficult than you might think. Good luck with it and keep us posted!
RancheroSteve Posted February 12, 2021 Posted February 12, 2021 Interesting idea! I think I'd be more inclined to try to build it as a fictional road racing sports car, but that's just me. I'm working on a drag Piranha currently, by the way.
tim boyd Posted February 12, 2021 Posted February 12, 2021 Years ago there was a continuing and long running article series in Model Car Mags using a similar approach to the image in the first post here....in fact, makes me wonder if it was that exact model car??? Anyway, the series had some really innovative modeling and ideas and was really well done.....well worth a look back through your issues archive....TIM
keyser Posted February 13, 2021 Posted February 13, 2021 The nicely built blue car is the remains of the Chevy Astro show car. Nothing on it is related to the spy car thingy. I forget name of funny car version, maybe Scorpion? Wish Astro could come back.
Mark Posted February 13, 2021 Posted February 13, 2021 The Astro I body/Piranha chassis funny car was the Scorpion. It was issued only once, early-mid Seventies. As for the spy car body on that chassis, the roof may or may not line up with the roll cage and driver area on the chassis, depending on the mismatch a decision will need to be made regarding which piece gets modified to make everything fit.

Don't have the kit yet, but looking at the parts overview on the bottom of the box it looks do able. Edited February 13, 2021 by magicmustang

PM me if you want try just that. I had a similar idea, based upon an early Piranha sketch, but not anything I am going to pursue: It might have been mentioned in one of the other existing AMT Piranha review topics: Edited February 13, 2021 by Casey

The coupe upper body is a close fit to the drag car lower body. Will have to open up the coupe rear wheel wells for sure and modify the engine cover. I think I will give it a go.
