I never "forgot" about him. Always thought about him floating alone while the other 2 were on the moon. How odd would that be? And thinking what if something bad happened on the moon and those 2 weren't able to leave? Then what happens with Michael Collins?

Anyway, it all went well and I'm glad he made it to 90.

Tony, I've often wondered the same thing. He was alone in the capsule for something like 21 hours. What does a guy do for 21 hours, floating alone in space?

From his memoirs...

"My secret terror for the last six months has been leaving them on the Moon and returning to Earth alone; now I am within minutes of finding out the truth of the matter. If they fail to rise from the surface, or crash back into it, I am not going to commit suicide; I am coming home, forthwith, but I will be a marked man for life and I know it. Almost better to not have the option I enjoy…”

I was in sixth grade. I remember watching it on TV,  I believe we watched a taped version the next day on American Forces Network in Germany.

I didn’t really follow the space program, I was all about cars, but I knew the significance of the accomplishment. I saved my Weekly Reader with it on the cover. I still have it!

I had tickets to see the entire Apollo 11 crew at the Huntsville Space Museum in Alabama on the 20th anniversary of the moon landing. It was one of the rare times that they all appeared together. Three days before that, I broke my back racing a go kart. STUPID! I still have the ticket stubs. I was so disappointed. RIP, Michael Collins, another true American hero.
