Snake45 Posted January 10, 2022 Posted January 10, 2022 Got this at the local toy show a few months ago. Overall shape looked good, and I liked the Cragars and slicks. But the more I got into the Snake-Fu, the less I liked the details. Had to do quite a bit of work to get it up to the level of even a mediocre Welly (not even a GOOD Welly), but it's okay. I guess the paint is supposed to be Calypso Coral, an authentic '69 Boss color, but it looks a little light to me—looks like somewhere between CC and '70 Grabber Orange. Oh well. The hood, trunk and rear panel had been painted a very glossy black. I masked these areas off and repainted them with Touch N Tone rattlecan flat black—much better. Also did the headlight recess areas and the front spoiler. Sanded the tire treads, and white-lettered the fronts with acrylic craft paint and a toothpick. Did chrome window trim with Decor Color Premium Silver Leaf marker. Strangely, the headlights were just black plastic nubs with no detailing. I did these with the Deco Color marker, too, but hope to replace them with something better someday. As I was working on the thing, I remembered that I had another diecast '69 Boss 302, and had remembered it as being “better” than this one. I dug it out and turns out it's also an Ertl—the same basic model. The blue one has actual clear headlight lenses, which makes a HUGE difference in the appearance. I think the paint job is better on it, too. Someday I think I'll try to remove all the hokey Federated tampo graphics from it and put on the stripe decals from the Revell Boss 302 kit, but it's not a high priority. Here are the two of them together.
Geno Posted January 10, 2022 Posted January 10, 2022 Wow, I think they both look great Rich. Love the slicks and Grabber Orange paint.??
Gramps46 Posted January 10, 2022 Posted January 10, 2022 The one I ordered Snake is the True Value one and I hope to have it in a couple of days. I will post pictures when I get it.
vamach1 Posted January 10, 2022 Posted January 10, 2022 At one time the orange Boss was sold as a pre-painted “kit” which was the same as the one your bought. As I recall the interior was more drag car like. The other similar diecasts I have seen have the full T/A interior and chassis. I actually used the interior and chassis for a Boss 302 T/A project I started a really long time ago. I need to find that one and finish it.
1959scudetto Posted January 12, 2022 Posted January 12, 2022 Well done, Snake - little things can make a big difference !
Gramps46 Posted January 13, 2022 Posted January 13, 2022 After seeing this Ertl Boss 302 I realized I did not have a '69 Boss 302. So I went looking on the Bay and found this one. I ordered this True Value version and it came yesterday and I found some interesting things about it. It is 1/25 unlike my other diecast Mustangs. It is a bank with key, It has no openings. The interior has a roll bar and racing seat. The windshield wipers are just paint on. The True Value script is on the trunk and suprisingly in the swoosh though very tiny. The wheels and tires are very nice though not accurate for the Boss 302. The taillights are barely visible in the dark rear panel. I really like it and will add it to the shelf as is I think.
Snake45 Posted January 13, 2022 Author Posted January 13, 2022 Very cool, Gramps! Yours looks much better than mine. They got the hood blackout right on yours, anyway. And the headlight surrounds. I assume yours has clear headlights?
Snake45 Posted January 13, 2022 Author Posted January 13, 2022 I just noticed yours also has the side marker lights. Neither of mine does.
vamach1 Posted January 13, 2022 Posted January 13, 2022 Very nice Gramps. It looks like it has its origins in the same mold as Snakes but with of course some differences.
