MrObsessive Posted July 5, 2009 Author Posted July 5, 2009 (edited) Okay! I finally got the wheels last week, so since I was off this week, I put 'em together. These look MUCH better IMO than the kit wires and the tires fill out those wheelwells much better too. I had to cheat with the rear window................while the front glass is the clear stencil sheet, the rear window is out of the kit. I couldn't get the acetate to cooperate with the curve at trailing edge of the backlight, so to move this along, I went and used the kit window instead. Nevertheless, the hard part is done............clearcoating and polishing are done, just some minor touchups to do. Also there's those niggling little details one needs to do before I can call this done. I wish I could work on this more often than I do...........but too much of life has gotten in the way lately. The wheels are just "pinned" on for the time being..........I just want to make sure the stance is what I want before I permanently epoxy 'em on. The roof of the car I decided to cover with BMF.............I didn't like the painted aluminum look of the roof, so I decided to take some "artistic license" with it Hope to get some more done soon...............but we'll see. roadhawg Posted July 5, 2009 Posted July 5, 2009 I was wondering how this was coming along. Absolutley georgous!!! I wish I could work on this more often than I do...........but too much of life has gotten in the way lately. Oh, Man...do I ever understand about that!!!
Len Woodruff Posted July 5, 2009 Posted July 5, 2009 Beautiful Build Bill! Can you tell me where you get your Herb Deeks stuff?
roadhawg Posted July 5, 2009 Posted July 5, 2009 Beautiful Build Bill! Can you tell me where you get your Herb Deeks stuff? Len, Herb sells his stuff on his Ebay store........... http://stores.shop.ebay.com/Herb-Deeks-Retro__W0QQ_armrsZ1 Very good to do business with!
Bernard Kron Posted July 5, 2009 Posted July 5, 2009 Every once in a while I miss the start of a great build. But how on earth did I miss this one!!! And to make things worse, it's almost completed. It's a beautiful build of what is revealing itself to be a beautiful car. The rims and p/e wires really set off the great paint choice. Now I'm going back to study every exquisite step...
Len Woodruff Posted July 5, 2009 Posted July 5, 2009 Thanks Tommy. I wonder why it didn't come up when I did an ebay search?
MrObsessive Posted July 5, 2009 Author Posted July 5, 2009 Thanks Len and Tommy! Len, those aren't Herb Deeks wheels on that........though I originally got Herb's wheels off eBay. He has a bunch listed on there now. Check the link below to see the "Buy it Now"............ http://snipurl.com/lsziq I didn't use them because to my view for this particular car, there weren't enough spokes to make it look correct. The wheels here are from Detail Master............the ones that are IMPOSSIBLE to get now. Since I last ordered them from Circle C Hobbies, they're completely sold out of 'em now. I would like to get a few more sets down the road for some future builds. I've searched around on the 'net and every place that listed them are sold out. Technomodel makes a nice wire wheel kit too............but they seem to be OOP also.
george 53 Posted July 5, 2009 Posted July 5, 2009 Well now Bill, I see what ya meant by stayin tuned! Man dude, that lil coug's lookin GOOD!!!!! ALOT different lookin than the buncha parts we saw last time! Yeesh dude, you make it ALL look so easy! AH ha, but those of us who have TRIED to build this kit know better! I don't think even FORD did as nice a job with the REAL one,as you have done on this one! Looks GREAT Bill, can't wait to see it ALL finished up. Heck, it looks good as it IS!!!!

As usual I've learned a lot from watching your progress. When you epoxy the wheels, can you post pictures of your progress. I would like to see how you ensure that all the wheels are on the ground. Also, you sanded the metallic duplicolor paint. I tried sanding metallic paint and ended up with an uneven finish. I've seen some advocate never sanding metallic, but you did it and got a great result. Are there any keys to getting the consistent/even finish that you achieved with sanding the color coat. Bye the way, I'm looking forward to reading your new article. The last one on the door hinges was tremendously helpful. Thanks for sharing your work in insight. It's greatly appreciated.

The last one on the door hinges was tremendously helpful. Thanks for sharing your work in insight. It's greatly appreciated. Thanks for the compliment! When I rub out metallic the key is very light rubbing out. I only do this to get rid of any dusties, and sometimes I may airbrush a very light coat back over where I sanded to even it out. Making sure where you're spraying is mostly dust free will go a long way to eliminating any dust in your paint 'til it cures. Yes, metallics shouldn't be sanded much because you can end up with a mottled, swirly appearance to the flakes. Some can get away with sanding/polishing metallics, but I've found it best to very lightly rub them out and then clearcoat. I don't have any special method for epoxying wheels..............mostly I eyeball everything to make sure it sits square on the ground. That's the main reason I like to pin the wheels on first to get an idea of how it'll sit, and then epoxy the wheels one at a time and eyeball it for straightness.
Harold Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 So I'm sitting here looking at your work, and I'm still trying to pick my jaw up off the floor. Mind boggling stuff.
62rebel Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 Bill i am astounded. i love to see your work, even though you make mine look pale puny and weak! i got about a quarter into the lindberg mustang concept car and it went horribly awry........ i should have sent it to you instead!

No, I haven't looked into them..............they're kind of a long lost name-----haven't heard about them in a while! They would have had the correct offset though as the wheels on the 1:1 Cougar were the same type as those on the MGB's. Thanks for all the nice words guys! Got the doors epoxied on the hinges yesterday, and the dash is now in. I'm going to try and get everything buttoned up in the next couple weeks as it's the little stuff that needs to be done now.
DR Dubois Posted July 19, 2009 Posted July 19, 2009 Mr. Obsessive, this build is simply amazing!! Love seeing how you go about these little details and tricks, like the magnet latches on the doors. Incredible!...
unclescott58 Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 Very, very cool. Beautiful build in more ways that one. This one of those kits I've always wondered about. After see your build, I will be picking up a Cougar II kit in the future. Scott
