I was curious to see if my printer would do a whole body without fuss, so I recently got very nice files from William David Cunningham on FB to do a Maserati Birdcage. Due to the print plate size, I had to angle the body on a rather steep angle, so I wouldn't get any error messages from the slicer. Print time was about 16 hours (I'm in NO hurry), and it came out pretty well.

This won't be a WIP for some time as there's other models I want to get done and finish up, and the Shelby is not too far from being on the downside of finally getting done.

Here are some pics of how it all turned out................

According to specs of the 1:1, William had this scaled to 1/24th. I decided to shrink this just a tad to 1/25, due to the very small nature of the car, and this is the rare example where I did want scale to come into play compared to other models I have.

Preview in the slicer..............Yup.....everything fits within Phrozen's parameters.

How it showed up just as it was done on the build plate.

I still have LOTS to print yet when the time comes for me to make this a full build.......full interior, windshield bucks for vacuforming, the chassis skeleton, wire wheels, tires, floor, etc. The chassis files are such that it's only seen below the windshield, and in the interior where it's quite visible. I've collected a ton of pics of the 1:1 as far as what the complete skeleton chassis looks like.......I may get brave and do a complete chassis along with a scratchbuilt/modified inline 4 cylinder engine.

We'll see..................

Anyway, as I've been saying for quite some time now, with 3D printing the sky's literally the limit as any car can be done if you have good files to print. ?

Mention the Facel HK anywhere Bill?  Looks nice as well.

I previewed it somewhat on FB as I had a screenshot of the body that had to be split. That one needs a complete makeover from bumper to bumper as there's some issues with it. I can't complain though as the file was FREE. You can't beat that, and I know of nowhere else you can get a printable file of a Facel Vega HK500 UNLESS you pay a ton of money for it such as sites like Hum3d, or CGtrader.

Stay tuned.......I'm going to create a thread for that one too shortly. ?

Beautiful print.

Bill Cunningham is the man as far as 3D-print-based models go at the moment.

I saw his completed Maser birdcage here back in November, and it's staggeringly good...probably well beyond anything I ever hope to achieve.

I was fortunate to have a conversation at the event with both Bill and Pico Elgin, another pioneering purveyor of nowhere-else-available 3D model files and parts. Great guys, both of them.

Nice to see you getting in on this one, and your adoption of the technology.  :D

Are the files to print the model available someplace, or do you have to know Bill on FB?  I've seen his store on Shapeways, but if I can get the files to print myself on my 3D printer I like how they turn out better.

Nice work Bill. I've only printed the chassis, which came out nice, and the body....not so much, the print failed over the front fender so I have to reprint.

I'm still working on the other files for printing but the kit is amazing. William's files are amazing.

I don't know about his store on Shapeways......he was offering them on FB to anyone that contacted him. I believe the only thing he asks is for them not to be sold as their own work, or something to that effect.

Thanks Bill, I was able to friend him on FB and sent him an email and received the files.  It's too bad the engine isn't included in the files, but what is there looks really nice.  I'm working on getting the files ready to print, and going to be printing 2 of them, one for myself and one for my friend Curt Raitz.  Curt builds some great models, so I can't wait to see what he does with it.

Rafael, the current issue #215 that just came out of Model Cars Magazine has a lot of info in it about 3D printing, and one of the articles titled "3D Roundtable" is a discussion with several "trailblazers" in 3D model printing.  One of them is Bill Cunningham that did the Maserati files, and at the end of the article they give the website of www.modelcarsmag.com/3dprintingresources where you can download the Maserati 3d files.  It is a Zip file, so you will need to extract all the files afterwards.  I hope this helps you out.

That's a very nice print of a beautiful car, I'll have to try one at 1/32 scale for my Slot car track.

Hi Bill,

Just found this by searching the www. Is there any way you can print me a copy of the birdcage? I would love to add it to my collection of race cars. The resin Aardvarks are unobtainable.

Does or did Bill Cunningham print a complete kit? That would be even better.
