I'd totally forgotten that Len Lesser had a brief -albeit, very important and intense- role in The Outlaw Josey Wales. 

What are some of your favourite "surprise" roles from character actors?

Joe strummer in some Jim Jarmusch film with Steve Buscemi. Joe Strummer, Elvis Costello, Shane MacGowan, Courtany Love, Dennis Hopper and Grace Jones in straight to hell. Nick Cave in some movies. John Doe in many movies and TV. Robyn Hitchcock in the Manchurian Candidate (remake). Mark E. Smith in 24-hour party people. Steve Earle in Leaves of grass. Robbie Robertson in the crossing guard. Urge Overkill in Kingpin and Waynes World 2, Nancy Wilson in Fast times at Ridgemont high. Tom Waits in many movies. Lee Ving in movies and TV Liz Phair in movies. Lemmy Kilmister in movies and TV. Philip Baker Hall (Bookman from Seinfeld) and Courtney Love in Sid and Nancy. I'm sure I'm forgetting some.............

Robert Vaughn, Normal Fell, Simon Oakland and Justin Tarr (Rat Patrol) were all in Bullitt.

Nathan Fillion and Ted Danson were both in Saving Private Ryan. 

John Ratzenberger (Cliff Claven) was in A Bridge Too Far.

George Takei was in The Green Berets.

Bob Newhart was in the Steve McQueen WWII movie Hell Is for Heroes.

Bill Paxton played a street punk in The Terminator.

John Vernon was also in the movie Charlie Verrick (Maynard Boyle)

Peter Cetera and other members from the the band Chicago were in Electra Glide In Blue

Alfred Hitchcock always made a cameo in his movies

Just a fleeting  glimpse of her in a 57 Thunderbird.

Tom Petty had about 2 minutes of screen time in The postman.

If I remember correctly, his short "intense" role ended with a bullet between the eyes.

Tom Petty (RIP) also did the voiceover work for Lucky on King of the Hill.

Larry Flynt played the role of a judge in The People Versus Larry Flynt (which also starred Courtney Love.)

Flea was also in The Big Lebowski.

Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre in Training Day.

Alanis Morissette in Dogma.

James Taylor in Two Lane Blacktop.

Meatloaf in Fight Club.

Dean Martin in Rio Bravo.

Don't forget Harrison Ford in American Graffiti too, he drove the '55 Chevy (later used in 2 Lane Blacktop) looking to drag race against that yellow deuce coupe.

Bill Paxton- Stripes (soldier no8....LOL)

John Ritter- Sling Blade (He stared in a short lived TV series with Billy Bob "Hearts of Fire"). 

Lance Henriksen- Network (I've seen that movie like 20 times and just noticed him as a network lawyer).

Who can forget all of the great supporting roles in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest"?

 

Danny DeVito, Christopher Lloyd, Scatman Crothers, Louise Fletcher.

 

A few of the lesser known actors that made appearances in the movie include Vincent Schiavelli, who also had roles in "The Great Gatsby", "The People vs. Larry Flint", "Fast Times at Ridgemont High", "Ghost", "Man on the Moon", and "Batman Returns".

Then there was Brad Dourif, who was also in "Dune", "Blue Velvet", "Mississippi Burning", and some of "The Lord of the Rings" movies.

Then of course, there was Michael Berryman of "The Hills Have Eyes" fame, who no doubt got roles just because of how freakin' weird looking he is! 

And we can't forget Will Sampson, who also played in "The Outlaw Josey Wales".

 

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest was Christopher Lloyd's and Brad Dourif's film debuts.

One of my all time favorite character actors was John Cazale.

 

His career was short, passing away at the age of 42, but he appeared in what in my opinion, were some  of the best movies ever made!!

"The Godfather", "The Godfather Part II", "Dog Day Afternoon", and "The Deer Hunter".

 

He appeared in five films over a seven year period, all of which were nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture!
