Allan Moffat Trans Am Mustang

Recommended Posts

This will be my tribute to the Moffat Mustang. As a Ford mad 19 year old this car made an immense impression on me when I first saw it.  Chassis 9FO2M148624 was built by Kar Kraft and given to Moffat to race in Australia.  It escaped from the US with it's 2" pie cut inner fender wells and is the only Kar Kraft Mustang to retain them.  I've had this kit for years but only now feel confident to do the modifications required, particularly the inner guards.  This has to be done to achieve the look, it's just so low at the nose compared to other Mustangs.

I have started with a Super CJ kit and have cut the guards, removed the battery, replaced the inner fender and replaced part of the radiator cowl.  I have also removed the transmission tunnel area in the interior.  So far so good.

I will build it as raced in 'Series Production' back in the '69/'70 so it shall retain the inner door panels and rear seat.

Tks for looking.

Just an update.

Body Pie cut scale 2" from radiator support panel to shock tower and using a hairdryer pulled the body down.

Replaced front inner guard passenger side

Replaced radiator support panel passenger side

Cut each wheel arch 14 times with razor saw and gently bent out and superglued

Modified radiator to reflect Kar Kraft design

Removed fake brake scoops

Chassis

Inner halves of rear wheel wells moved inboard

Lower subframe shaved to allow chassis to sit higher (front suspension subframe notched 20mm on actual car)

Interior

Removed centre console

Sectioned dashboard and prepared for new dash

Interior panels and rear seat left as required for the Australian Series Production rules.

All the hard work is now done!!

Tks for looking.

Your work on the fender flares looks very smooth. I tried the method once and did not achieve as nice a result.

Did you make your own Webbers?

Hi Pierre, yes, have some resin DCOE's and removed the fuel bowl.  Pretty ordinary but it works when looking down, the trumpets are ferrules.

Finished the interior. Scratch built roll cage similar to the Moffat/KarKraft cars, photo etched window winders and home made photo etch door pulls and switch box.

Body has had a couple of initial coats of paint.

Will be posted "under glass" within a couple of weeks, all going to plan.

Tks for looking.
