Self driving cars...a trainwreck waiting to happen. I would never trust a computer.

So, you don't fly? You realize that a "computer" and a glide slope at the airport is what really lands the plane, right? Things go wrong at times, but things go right most of the time. Except when the people entrusted with flying the plane don't know what to do when the glide slope is turned off.

No I don't fly. Can't afford to go anywhere. And ain't getting what they force on us to fly. Roads are far more crowded. Try rush hour traffic by computer. No thanks. Not interested. My right. If people are too stupid to know how to drive, all this technocrap imo is partially to blame. People get stupid when they don't have to learn to do anything.

You a pilot?

I am, and I can tell you that an automated landing of a single aircraft in closely controlled airspace, always with humans in the cockpit and on the ground monitoring the descent, is an entirely different thing than computers driving vehicles on streets populated by large numbers of dozy, unpredictable humans and other vehicles in the immediate environment.

The automated landing systems require a human pilot to be awake and aware constantly in the event of a system failure of any kind, and pilots flying aircraft equipped with automated landing capability are usually drilled exhaustively in system-failure procedures.

Comparing self-driving cars to automated landing systems isn't comparing apples and oranges; it's more like comparing bowling balls to manatees.

Honest people within the self-driving development community admit the reality of 100% autonomy is still well in the future, and is turning out to be much harder than initially imagined.

EDIT: NTSB's conclusion regarding the incident linked above: "Over-reliance on automation and lack of systems understanding by the pilots were cited as major factors contributing to the accident" which nicely sums up most crashes involving today's level of "autonomous" surface vehicles as well.

EDIT 2: Computers and AI will get there, but they aren't there yet.

Nice Comparison.

Can I use it?

For a period of time last year Tesla had to turn off the autopilot in parts of Toronto due to streetcars located in the middle of the road with passengers getting on and off. Gotta wonder how many other one off situations will be discovered literally by accident.

That Mrs. Rip Van Winkle will face charges of:

- Not maintaining control of their vehicle

- Endangerment

- D.U.I. (sleepy driving is charged as a DUI here)

While I absolutely despise the dumbing down of society via "an-app-will-show-me-what's-really-happening" mindset, the autopilot itself isn't to blame -- the operating instructions are explicit in this regard; motor vehicle codes reflect this.

I just find it funny that the news woman stated that sleeping behind the wheel in CA is not only dangerous, but illegal.Uh…Duh?.Hey maybe she was an undiagnosed narcoleptic.?

Only my opinion, since everyone has one. All of these "driver aids" in the newer cars and trucks will help compensate for the short comings of the driver, but the problem is to many drivers seem to rely more and more on these aids instead of just paying attention to driving.  Sort of like the TV ad where a pickup is going down the hiway on cruise control so that everyone inside is playing some sort of hand clapping game and a dog is howling. That's not someone I want to see in the lane beside me on the hiway.
