ModelcarJR Posted August 8, 2023 Posted August 8, 2023 (edited) This is the next build. I bought this at a model contest this year thinking that I would like to build a T-bucket. I may have picked the wrong one to build. This is a kit that was manufactured in 1999 and it is showing. The chrome tree is starting to peel. I have already stripped chrome from 7 pieces and it may become more. The very short frame had 4 sink marks on the left side and three on the right. I forgot to take a picture before I puttied it up but you can see that almost the entire length of the frame is puttied. Lots of flash as well. I don't know if I'll find anything else but I am wary. Thanks for looking! ? Edited August 9, 2023 by ModelcarJR Copy text 2
ea0863 Posted August 9, 2023 Posted August 9, 2023 Aah, the ravages of time Consider it a challenge that will make the final product that much more meaningful! I, for one, will be watching your progress with interest on this classic model. 1
Zippi Posted August 9, 2023 Posted August 9, 2023 Should be a pretty kewl little Hot Rod T-Bucket once your done. Since most everything will show you'll need to bring your A game on this one but I know your up to the challenge. I'll be keeping an eye on this one.
customline Posted August 9, 2023 Posted August 9, 2023 Yeah, John, what Bob said. But it might be fun to just build another frame and use the kit frame for reference. Maybe just replace the rails. Use what's good and replace what ain't ?. Above all, Make Big Daddy proud! (and don't be a Rat Fink!) I'm following, get busy.
espo Posted August 9, 2023 Posted August 9, 2023 The frame sure looks to be a challenge. May have to do with the tooling in use at that time, but this was not an uncommon issue. Sounds like you might just as well strip all of the chrome parts and redo them with some of the chrome paints on the market now.
milo1303s Posted August 9, 2023 Posted August 9, 2023 I believe that tooling goes back alot further then 1999 more like 69 0r so !!!
ModelcarJR Posted August 9, 2023 Author Posted August 9, 2023 (edited) Thanks, All! I'll try not to melt under the pressure! The right door opens on this one but it doesn't really hinge. It can be posed either open or closed. I could make a hinge but I'm just gonna leave it this way. The frame is quite a challenge and I guess I got too much paint on it. But not to worry, I have already sanded it off, re-primered and painted so it looks much better. I mocked it up a little to see how it will come together. I don't have metallic purple so I used Tamiya purple. Yes, my camera makes it look blue. Guess I'll try to find another camera setting. The white is Tamiya white primer and the red block is Dupli-Color Bright Red. Thanks for looking! ? Edited August 9, 2023 by ModelcarJR Add another comment 2
ModelcarJR Posted August 11, 2023 Author Posted August 11, 2023 I built the engine and decided not to add plug wires. This will just be an Box Stock build. No fan in the box and not included in instructions. The radiator, however, doesn't have an electric fan. Maybe I'll add a fan. I took two photos and you can kinda see the purple in the brighter photo but the white bleaches out. Thanks for looking! ? 1
customline Posted August 12, 2023 Posted August 12, 2023 Doesn't look half bad, JR! Purple works well for the era.
ModelcarJR Posted August 12, 2023 Author Posted August 12, 2023 Thanks, Jim! I appreciate your comment! Finished the chassis, wheels and tires and the engine is in. Now I just have to finish the interior bucket and this one will be on the way to being done. The chassis was very fiddly but I managed to get it together despite the poor instructions. I don't know how anyone could stay on the bench seat in this one without sliding off! And yes, the paint is purple and maybe I can get some outdoor photos when I'm done. Thanks for looking! ? 1
customline Posted August 13, 2023 Posted August 13, 2023 It looks a whole lot better with wheels, JR ? and yes, it's a wonderful shade of purple ?. The white upholstery sets it up beautifully.

You would brace yourself with your feet on the "Toe Board" against the back of the fire Wall.
ModelcarJR Posted August 14, 2023 Author Posted August 14, 2023 Thanks, Jim and David! I appreciate your comments! Jim, I am glad you're seeing it in purple because my computer and camera are in blue for the most part. David, I guess the driver would have to shift to neutral before starting to brake to brace with the left foot. Otherwise, it could be a jerky or abrupt stop sliding forward with a foot on the clutch and the other on the brake. I found a radiator with an electric fan incorporated on it. I shortened it a bit and will paint it so that I don't need to find a fan. the interior is done but not without some difficulty. First, I had sprayed the old decals with a coat of clear lacquer hoping that it would help them not breaking apart. I cut the six white gauge decals and applied them and put a brush of Micro Sol on each one. I then left and let them dry for about an hour. When I returned all looked good except the Speedo which is the large left gauge. It hadle up in kind of an arc. So i gently touched it with a wet brush and it disintegrated into a million little pieces! So after removing it I then found an old Fred Cady decal that I had used for Indy race cars, a two piece decal, white back and black front that sort of looked like a speedo and used it. look too bad but this buggy is moving at about 70 mph! I bent a straight pin for the shifter because the kit piece was unusable and found a banjo steering wheel in the parts box. I cut the clear acetate in the kit after cleaning it as well as possible, but I had to do the cutting using the windshield frame because the pattern in the instructions was too small for the frame. Mirror foil on the mirror and it is done! I also had to touch up the windshield frame with a Molotow pen to repair the chrome finish that was chipped off. Thanks for looking! ? 1
slusher Posted August 14, 2023 Posted August 14, 2023 Looking very sharp, John in that purple and white. Your not far from finishing this one..
ModelcarJR Posted August 15, 2023 Author Posted August 15, 2023 Thanks, Carl! I appreciate your comment! This one is done. It certainly was a challenging build but I enjoyed it - to a point. I wish the kit had been in better shape. But its done! Thanks for looking! ?
bobss396 Posted August 15, 2023 Posted August 15, 2023 That looks like the OG style issue from when I was a kid. Most of us gave up on them... the stuff was way too fiddly for a 10-year old to tackle. I knew only one kid that had the patience and skill to pull one off.

But maybe now...naaaah.....

I was about 10... got the Revell '31 Ford woodie... never finished it. It was hard to tell the parts from the chrome-tree. Other Revell gems of the era were the '56 Ford pickup, the '56 Chevy (green car on box top) and the '57 Nomad. I had always wanted to do the OG '55 Chevy (2 cars racing on the box top) based on the boxart alone.

ModelcarJR Posted August 18, 2023 Author Posted August 18, 2023 Thanks, Bob, Gary and Jim! I appreciate your comments! Here are a few of the models you mentioned, Bob, I think. The 31 Ford is not a woodie but it is a Revell kit. I don't have the pick-up but it and the 56 Chevy, 57 Chevy Nomad and the 55 OG Chevy you mentioned were all originally Monogram kits. You can tell because they are all 1/24 scale. Once upon a time, they were a separate company from Revell. The 55 Chevy is a turd but the 56 and 57 Nomad are pretty nice kits. The 31 might be a different kit than the one you are referencing because it was a pretty nice kit and went together well. Thanks for looking and thanks for the comments! ?
bobss396 Posted August 19, 2023 Posted August 19, 2023 (edited) The '31 Ford was a woodie, the box art had it posed like a surf wagon, in stock form with black wheels. I'll look for a shot of it. I'm going to see a collector later on, I'll see if he has one that isn't buried. Found one. I think the one I had was way older. https://www.modelroundup.com/product-p/rmx-7637.htm Edited August 19, 2023 by bobss396 ssaffhhj

Ever since then they have been issued seperately. Original issue box
