MarkJ Posted November 22, 2024 Author Posted November 22, 2024 Thanks, Anton. I'm getting closer and closer to a mass primering of many assemblies and parts followed by a mass painting of many assemblies and parts. Then I can put everything together and possibly have a finished model after more than a year of trials and tribulations.
MarkJ Posted November 26, 2024 Author Posted November 26, 2024 Started to add the windshield supports to the cage. Some genius at Revell thought it would be cool to mold the wiper blades right into the windshield. Does anyone have any idea how I can remove them without ruining the windshield? I have not attached the lower ends of the windshield supports because I'm really not ready to install the dash. The supports will bend out of the way so I can remove it to prime the mothership chassis before adding all the painted sub-assemblies to it. I will be able to pose this build with body on or off the chassis. At least I'm hoping I can. 1
Pierre Rivard Posted November 27, 2024 Posted November 27, 2024 I did it once on my Ferrari 275P. The windshield had a big multi-arm wiper. I taped around it and carefully removed material with a blade making sure I did not cut too deep and into the glass surface. I then removed the tape and wet sanded the area starting with 600 grit and gradually worked my way up to 8000. Next step was Tamiya fine compound and then finish compound. Final step was a good wash with dishwasher soap and then a coat of Future.

I would have never thought of the masking to cut down on the area I would need to polish later. I also have the liquid polish that comes in 3 different strengths that I can try before the final future coating. Can't think of the name of it at the moment. This build has no wipers so at least I don't have to make one.
MarkJ Posted November 27, 2024 Author Posted November 27, 2024 (edited) Turns out the windshield has a black border around it and the wipers sit on it at the bottom, so I just masked off where it goes and removed the wiper arms and blades and just painted it black. I finished the windshield supports and reinstalled the small radiator supports that keep getting broke off from handling the mothership for all these new additions to it. I'm sure I will break them off again before final assembly. Edited November 27, 2024 by MarkJ 2
Mattilacken Posted November 29, 2024 Posted November 29, 2024 Looking good you got a nice smoth surface there, have ben using the Valejo Air series since they are pre thinned so to say. They are good for AB as well as brush.
MarkJ Posted December 1, 2024 Author Posted December 1, 2024 Thanks Anton. I used the regular Vallejo black, but I thinned it 50%. I like that it dries very quickly and if you get some on the un sanded surface of the windshield you can remove it with a toothpick
MarkJ Posted December 1, 2024 Author Posted December 1, 2024 Started working on the window net. used some 1/16-inch black crepe tape placed on a pattern on a plain sheet of paper. It peels off and I will just paint the glue side of the tape to finish it. Quick and easy way to make a window net from the eighties. Earlier ones were made with a rope material which you have to use thread to make them. Not as easy. 2
MarkJ Posted December 3, 2024 Author Posted December 3, 2024 Finally got it cut down to the size I wanted. It will be able to be removed and also with the body on it will be able to be posed with it laying down on the door for driver access. It snaps into place at the bottom and there are hooks at the top to attach it to the cage. 1
Mattilacken Posted December 3, 2024 Posted December 3, 2024 Great progress there! Neat looking saftey nett. will keep it in mind for when i do my C5R since the plastic ones are junk.

It is a barren waste land for purchasing modeling items where I live. There are no model shops anywhere close except maybe downtown Houston where I would not go by it any time soon or actually never. 1
MarkJ Posted December 6, 2024 Author Posted December 6, 2024 Got the Front shocks ready for primer and the removable window net is finished except for a tiny bit of touch up. 2
MarkJ Posted December 6, 2024 Author Posted December 6, 2024 Andrew, it's mostly an extinct entity, but some people still have them. Usually a mom & pop store in a strip shopping center that might hold two dozen cars.

Pierre Rivard Posted December 6, 2024 Posted December 6, 2024 I am so fortunate to have a fantastic hobby store just minutes away. Model kits, trains, planes and lots of various supplies. Just like 1975!

The model shops around here have morphed into radio control shops for planes, drones and road vehicles but no model kits or paint or even adhesives. It's mainly where radio control guys hang out all day to stay away from their wives and families. I think the internet kind of killed what was the old type of model shop and maybe even Hobby Lobby too. Kinda sad.
NerdmanB Posted December 7, 2024 Posted December 7, 2024 Mark I just found this build. Your scratch building is amazing, you are very talented. I will be following this to the end. Very impressive.

The end should not be too much longer.
MarkJ Posted December 9, 2024 Author Posted December 9, 2024 Working on mounting the front shocks. It's going to be a really tight fit, but I think it will all work out okay. Last thing to make will be lengthening the drive shaft. After that I can start priming and painting all these parts and get them installed where they go. Have to re-paint the body. I handled it so much in the fabrication of chassis parts, I messed it up. 1
Pierre Rivard Posted December 9, 2024 Posted December 9, 2024 The front clip on this baby is really great, like the rest of this chassis. Scratchbuilding extraordinaire. Always tricky to choose when to paint the body as we want to minimize handling after that. Oh well.... back to the paint booth.
1959scudetto Posted December 9, 2024 Posted December 9, 2024 Extraordinary work with the roll cage and chassis tubing, Mark. In contrast to that, a repaint of the body will be an easy task for you.
