Thanks, Helmut. I didn't mean for it to last this long but I'm getting a little long in the tooth and make a lot of mistakes which causes a lot of do overs. I'm hoping my next build won't have as much scratch building involved. but sometimes the scratch building can be very rewarding to have something that has only been done once even if it's not that great, it's one of a kind. 3
MarkJ Posted January 23 Author Posted January 23 Finally got the body sanded and will prime it with the Mr. Surfacer 1000. Temps are supposed to get back in the 60's tomorrow after the freak snowstorm we experienced on tuesday. It has never snowed this much in the 51 years I have lived here south of Houston. Never thought my little truck would be covered with the white stuff.
MarkJ Posted January 24 Author Posted January 24 Got the travel stop chains installed to the rear axle. Installed the engine and radiator. 2
Pierre Rivard Posted January 24 Posted January 24 Snow in Texas, California burning in the winter, hardly any snow on the ground here up north....crazy ! Nice truck btw Sometimes you gotta go back to the can. I did Tamiya spray primer on my resin Alfa 8C... so you are forgiven and get to keep your VP title of the Brush Painter Society...😁

I did Tamiya spray primer on my resin Alfa 8C... so you are forgiven and get to keep your VP title of the Brush Painter Society...😁 Thanks, Pierre, but I think I'm going to be fired from the society because my body painting with the brush has dramatically gotten worse so I think I will take my knowledge gained from brush painting and mix up the right color but apply it with my new little airbrush I bought to do the chrome on the wheels with alclad chrome originally. sorry but i think I have no choice.
MarkJ Posted January 25 Author Posted January 25 I'm still going to do 95% of my painting with a brush just not the bodies anymore. If I could get the results, you get, I would stay with it. Now I just have to wait till conditions are right outside to shoot the airbrush.
MarkJ Posted January 25 Author Posted January 25 Really liked the results I got with the Mr. Surfacer 1000 rattle can. It went on very easily and I had no issues at all with crazing or anything else. I think after I sand it, it will be the perfect primer for the Vallejo paint I will mix up and put in a dropper bottle for easy use in the airbrush. Not looking forward to cleaning the airbrush but I'm hoping the results will be worth it. Thanks, Andrew, for the tip on the primer. Bottom of the chassis is slowly coming together. 3
MarkJ Posted January 27 Author Posted January 27 I will repaint all the chrome parts for the engine black today and hope to Revell chrome them tomorrow. Then I can totally finish the engine except for the plumbing part.
MarkJ Posted January 27 Author Posted January 27 The hood is not shutting tightly in front, and I really hate that in a model. Especially a race car. I have an idea I'm going to try and will document it here if it works . Now is the time to fix it, not after I paint it.

MarkJ Posted January 29 Author Posted January 29 Added some more stuff to the chassis. Will need a lot of touching up once everything is in place. Very tight fit. Got the air cleaner ready again for the black base coat for the chrome. Got the hood to fit tight at the front with some wedge brackets. Not what the real car had but I hate a lose hood at the front. You have to install the hood to the front first and then push it down in the back. Needless to say, it won't be operational with hinges. Just removable. I will reveal the wedge brackets later. Might have to rethink plumbing the engine. I might have run out of talent to get that done. 1
MarkJ Posted January 31 Author Posted January 31 (edited) I don't know how I did it, but I managed to break off the right header collector and lose it. Like I keep saying, its one step forward and two steps back for me on this build. I did manage to install the seat and dash and fix the right chain on the rear axle that somehow, I broke lose. As usual a lot of touch up work will have to be done before this baby is finished. Edited January 31 by MarkJ 1
MarkJ Posted February 2 Author Posted February 2 Re did the air cleaner and valve cover breathers. Will treat them like gold from here on out. Revell Chrome does not like to be handled by human hands. Found it out the hard way.
MarkJ Posted February 6 Author Posted February 6 All I lack is the exhaust, Installing the tires and wheels, the plumbing and the very, very final touchup and the chassis will be finished. Probably no more wip pictures until the final photos of the build in the under-glass forum. Of course, I need to sand the body and do a complete repaint using an airbrush whenever conditions outdoors will allow it. Then decals and this thing will finally be in my rear-view mirror. It's been a year and 6 months since I started, and I will be so glad when this build is over.
MarkJ Posted February 7 Author Posted February 7 Decided on just three more wip pictures. Only thing really left to do after finishing the exhaust is plumbing the chassis, painting the body, installing the wheels/tires, adding the windshield and back glass, and decaling. I'm like the computer Hal from "2001 a Space Odyssey".. "I can feel it Dave, I can feel it." I'm almost through with this never-ending build. 2
Pierre Rivard Posted February 7 Posted February 7 You've taken on a big one here, basically scratch building most of it. Must feel great to finally see the finish line not too far ahead.
MarkJ Posted February 7 Author Posted February 7 Thanks, Pierre. You are totally correct about that. Cannot wait to finish this one.
1959scudetto Posted February 8 Posted February 8 Mark, I can hear your sigh of relief all the way to Europe if you finally bring this to an end. Wheels look great, by the way.
TransAmMike Posted February 8 Posted February 8 Well Mark, I'm sure you're looking forward to wrapping this bad boy up. I really like Mr. Surfacer paints. I pretty much use the 1500 primer airbrushed. Goes on super smooth...well usually. Great work so far!!
MarkJ Posted February 8 Author Posted February 8 Thank you, Helmut. Your stopping by to give the encouraging words means a lot. I'm glad you like the tires and wheels. They usually make or break a race car model.
MarkJ Posted February 8 Author Posted February 8 Thanks, Mike, for also stopping by and giving the build some love. I was working on the exhaust and somehow pulled on the rear axle not meaning to and broke the little chains. Now I have that to fix which isn't going to be easy. Like I keep saying, 1 step forward and 2 steps back. I also broke the bracket holding the small oil radiator at the left front corner of the model. I'm like a bull in a China shop. Thats a saying my dad always used back in the day when he was building guitars and messed something up. He built beautiful flamenco guitars.
