Dave Van Posted September 30, 2023 Posted September 30, 2023 As a owner of a real 1966 Mustang fastback I was thrilled to see the return of this kit. I bought 3 right off the bat. Overall it's the old coupe tooling with new interior, body and hood and some wheels. After I did normal prep of mold lines and flash, I shot some Tamiya white primer on the body. I then noticed the body had a rough texture to it. The side were bad, upper surfaces not so bad. It took 3 prime, wet to get a just OK surface to paint. I then used a entire new can of Tamiya bright red just for the body....still not 100% but I am moving on. Anyone else have one of these kits with rough surface or did I get a run before they finish polished the tooling. Thanks 3
bobss396 Posted October 1, 2023 Posted October 1, 2023 Odd they would issue a kit with a rough body like that. I generally take my time with bodies, re-scribe panel lines, remove flash, give every outside feature a slight radius to they take more paint. Then I'll wet-sand with 2400 grit and wash with soap and water before I shoot any primer. 1
Can-Con Posted October 1, 2023 Posted October 1, 2023 Just checked mine. There's a "satin" finish on mine but not what I'd consider rough. It's about what I'd expect after going over the body with 3600 grit or so sandpaper.
David G. Posted October 1, 2023 Posted October 1, 2023 I'm not sure what I would do with that. Sanding and more paint or strip and start over? David G.
Pierre Rivard Posted October 1, 2023 Posted October 1, 2023 Looks good Dave, despite the challenge you faced. Just surprising that 3 coats of primer did not do enough to eradicate this. Porosity in the styrene?
Duddly01 Posted December 1, 2023 Posted December 1, 2023 Any more progress on this project? I built one based on my 1966 GT Fastback and I am working on a second (Kit bashed with AMT 67 for better chassis). I didn't have any problems painting it. No issues with roughness. Not sure why yours did. 1
