conchan Posted October 28, 2023 Posted October 28, 2023 With the latest kit I am building, 1995 Tamiya Ford Mustang Cobra R kit (1/24), the shifter is missing. The kit was bought used and this is the only part missing. As it is an old kit Tamiya no longer stocks replacement parts. How can I get a replacement shifter? My spare parts box didn’t have one.
stitchdup Posted October 28, 2023 Posted October 28, 2023 You could make on if you have small files. Just take a bit of the sprue and start shaping the end into a shifter. I find it simpler to leave it on a decent length of the sprue while shaping it and just remove the section of sprue last. Leaving the section of sprue on gives you something to hold on to 1

I make them all the time for stock cars, using a shirt pin as the shift knob and of course the pin only shortened and sleeved with shrink tube.
NOBLNG Posted October 28, 2023 Posted October 28, 2023 The boot would be the hardest part. Maybe crinkle up a piece of tin foil? Or tissue and a bit of CA to stiffen it up?
Dpate Posted October 28, 2023 Posted October 28, 2023 There’s actually quite a few aftermarket shifters you can get. Here’s a example. 1
Mark Posted October 28, 2023 Posted October 28, 2023 I'd file the grip from a piece of sprue, leaving a "stalk" to form a boot. As for the boot, that looks like a job for epoxy putty.
Deathgoblin Posted October 30, 2023 Posted October 30, 2023 What about using Green Stuff or Miliput to make the boot? Both are two component materials that remain pliable before hardening.
Can-Con Posted October 31, 2023 Posted October 31, 2023 How about just asking in the wanted section if anyone has a shifter from an AMT or Revell '85 Mustang? AMT,,
Bills72sj Posted October 31, 2023 Posted October 31, 2023 I made my shifters from hat pins. If you dip the head in thickened black paint, you could simulate the vertically extended knob. As for the boot, I would use silly putty or an equivalent and paint it too.
